Eagles defeat Drake and Alabama State

Box Scores: Game One, Game Two.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (EMUEagles.com)
— The Eastern Michigan University softball team picked up a pair of wins over Drake and Alabama State in its opening games in the Lady Bison Classic today, March 9, at Draper Diamond in Nashville, Tenn.

The Eagles improve to 6-11 on the year after cruising by Drake (6-12) , 4-0, and blanking Alabama State (2-15), 5-0.

Jenna Ignowski (5-1) provided a solid performance in the circle and captured her third complete-game effort of the season in the Eagles 4-0 win over Drake this afternoon. The righty hurler struck out four while holding the Bulldogs' offense to just two hits.

Offensively, the Eagles connected on five hits, with Jessica Richards pacing the Green and White with a 2-for-3 performance in her sixth multiple-hit game on the season. The speedy senior also swiped three bases to push her career total to 56, tying Angie Fielder ('90) for third all-time in the EMU record books.

Richards collected the first of her two singles to start the opening inning for the Eagles. She would eventually find herself standing on third base after stealing second and advancing another 60 feet on a Katy Blaharski single to center field. Blaharski was picked off on a steal attempt at second, only to give Richards an opportunity to score on the throw and give her team an early 1-0 lead.

Courtney Nicholson's single and back-to-back walks loaded the bases for McKenna Russ in the fifth. The senior reached safely on an errant throw to first which allowed two runs to score and push the Eagles' lead to three.

Sarah Gerber completed EMU's offensive efforts in the seventh inning with an RBI-single to left field that allowed Richards to score from third and finalize the Eagles' 4-0 win.

Lauren Wells (1-6) earned her first win of the season in the Eagles' 5-0 victory over the Lady Hornets. In seven innings of work, the sophomore matched a career-high 10 strikeouts while holding opposing batters to just two hits in the game.

Seven Eagles accounted for eight hits on the day, with Allison Scherer owning two in the contest. Scherer also scored once and drove in a run for the Green and White.

The Eagles strung together a four-hit second inning to take its first lead of the nightcap. Scherer led off the frame with a single to left and advanced to second on a passed ball. A sacrifice bunt off the bat of Amanda Herron advanced Scherer to third with one out, allowing Nellie Coquillard to collect an RBI with her single to right field. Nicholson followed with a single of her own, eventually leading to a bases loaded situation for Tolliver who checked in to pinch hit for EMU. The senior came through with a two-run single to center field, giving the Green and White a 3-0 lead. Richards later came around to score for an EMU four-run lead.

In the fifth, EMU tallied its final run of the ballgame on a Scherer single to center field.

The Eagles will return to action tomorrow, March 10 with a pair of games against both Lipscomb and Middle Tennessee State. First pitch is scheduled for 12:15 p.m. and 4:45 p.m. CST, respectively.
