EMU falls to Lipscomb 11-3 and Middle Tennessee State 6-5
Box Scores: Game One, Game Two.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University softball team dropped a pair of games in its second day of action at the Lady Bison Classic in Nashville, Tenn. today, March 10.
The Eagles fall to 6-13 on the year after falling to host Lipscomb University, 11-3, and Middle Tennessee State, 6-5.
The Green and White suffered an 11-3 setback in its run-ruled shortened affair with host Lipscomb in the opening game of the day.
EMU connected on just three hits compared to the Lady Bison's 12 in the contest.
Linsday Rich lasted just 1.1 innings in the loss, allowing four earned runs on four hits. Jenna Ignowski checked into the game in relief, but the righty hurler allowed seven LU runs before Jessica Wilkes took over pitching duties and closed out the game facing three opposing hitters.
Jessica Richards, McKenna Russ, Courtney Loe and Amanda Stanton accounted for all of the Eagles' offense, with Russ driving in two of the Green and White's three runs.
A four-run second inning by Lipscomb created a considerable deficit for EMU early, but the Eagles would try to chip away in the third frame.
After Richards reached first base on a fielder's choice, Russ would hit her in to score on a two-out single to center field and cut Lipscomb's lead to three.
The Eagles would score its second run on an LU fielding error that allowed Allison Scherer to reach home plate, setting the score to 5-2.
The Lady Bison retailed with four more runs in the fourth inning to build a 9-2 lead, but the Eagles continued to fight with another run in the fifth.
A single from Stanton and a Richards double put runners at second and third for Russ. The senior drove a fly ball to right, allowing Stanton to tag up and plate the Eagles third and final run of the game.
In game two, the Green and White were edged out 6-5 in a closely fought ballgame.
Six Eagle hits compared closely with MTSU's eight in the contest, but a three run bottom of the seventh helped lift the Blue Raiders over EMU.
The Green and White held onto a two run lead in the final inning of play, but pitching woes accounted for two runs as two MTSU batters were hit by pitches in a bases loaded sitation to tie the game. A final hit by pitch plated the winning run for the Blue Raiders as they clinched the 6-5 win.
Linsay Smith led the Eagles with two hits and two RBI in the contest, while Courtney Nicholson chipped in with two RBI as well.
Lindsay Rich falls to 0-6 on the year after giving up three runs in 1.2 innings of work. Lauren Wells threw 4.1 innings in the circle, allowing three earned on seven MTSU hits and striking out six.
The Eagles will return to action March 16-18 at the Miami Invitational.
