EMU falls 5-0 in game one, 4-3 in game two
Box Scores: Game One, Game Two.
FORT WAYNE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University softball team dropped a doubleheader with IPFW this afternoon, March 27, at IPFW Softball Field, dropping game one 5-0 and game two, 4-3.
The Eagles (9-17) could not manufacture runs in game one, as the Green and White were shutout despite registering seven hits in the contest.
Jenna Ignowski (6-4) suffered the game one loss, tossing three innings and giving up three runs on four hits. Lindsay Rich checked in midway through the contest to hurl three innings in relief. The freshman gave up two runs on three hits while striking out one.
Katy Blaharski led the Eagles offensively with a 2-for-3 day at the plate. Jessica Richards, Amanda Herron, Allison Scherer, Courtney Loe and Amanda Stanton accounted for the remainder EMU's offensive effort.
Miscues attributed to three IPFW runs in the first. Ignowski misplayed a ball that bounced over her glove, placing runners at first and second for the home team. After a sacrifice bunt, IPFW's Ashleigh Bousquet singled up the middle to give her team a 1-0 lead. A fielder's choice and another base hit closed out the Mastodon's three-run frame.
EMU bats made some noise in the second and were led off by a shot from Herron that ricocheted off of the pitcher's shin for a base hit. She would advance to second on an Scherer sacrifice bunt, bringing Loe to the plate. The junior drove a pitch to the left side of the infield, but an athletic play by the home team's shortstop caught Herron in a rundown to record the second out of the inning. Amanda Stanton followed with a single to left and advanced to second on the throw, placing two in scoring position for the Eagles.
EMU came within inches to tying the ballgame in the next at bat. Lindsay Smith connected a towering fly ball that had the distance to clear the left center field fence, but IPFW's Larissa Franklin jumped and reached over the top to rob Smith of a three-run shot.
IPFW tallied two more runs in the fifth. A wild pitch by Rich in the allowed a run to come across and a fielder's choice to second gave the Mastodon's a 5-0 lead.
The Eagles failed to respond offensively in the final two innings, allowing IPFW to secure the 5-0 win.
In game two, the Eagles' defense collapsed in the sixth after blowing a 3-0 lead late in the game. Lauren Wells (2-7) gave up just one hit in five innings, but a four-run, five-hit sixth by the Mastodons alongside a costly EMU error allowed the home team to come back from a three-run deficit.
McKenna Russ would drive in the Eagles' only runs of the ballgame with a three-run shot in the third as part of her 1-for-3 effort at the plate. Blaharski picked up her 10th multiple-hit game of the season with two in the contest, while Courtney Nicholson also tallied a hit for the Eagles.
After the Eagles surrendered a three-run lead in the sixth, the Green and White attempted to scrap together a comeback of its own. Richards reached base after drawing a one-out walk and advanced 60 feet on her 17th stolen base of the season, while Blaharski got to first on a fielder's choice. With runners at the corners and the tying run at third, the Mastodons managed to record the final two outs and steal the come-from-behind win.
The Eagles will return to action tomorrow, March 28, when they travel to Rochester, Mich. for a pair of games with Oakland. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
