Gymnastics to Compete at MAC Championships

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)-The Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team will travel to DeKalb, Ill. to compete in the Mid-American Conference championships, Saturday, March 24. Competition is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
LAST SEASON: The EMU gymnastics team finished in sixth place at the 2011 MAC Championships at McGuirk Arena, recording a team score of 192.425. Nikole Viltz led the Eagles in the competition, finishing tied for fourth on the vault posting a 9.825. Kristina Kurkmilis had a solid performance posting a 9.750 on the vault finishing in 13th. Stacie Wood had EMU's highest mark on the uneven parallel bars, as her 9.650 helped the Eagles finish with a team score of 47.625 on the bars.
TIED FOR FOURTH: Eastern Michigan finished the regular season tied for fourth with Northern Illinois University and Ball State University. The Green and White recorded a season-high team score of 193.850 at the ninth-annual Eagle Invitational, March 10. EMU more than doubled the wins from 2011 tallying an overall record of 10-9.
FANTASTIC FRESHMAN: Freshman Anna Willette and Paulina Miller were two of the many young Eagles to lead the team this season. Willette ranks 14th in the MAC on the vault, 19th on the beam and 26th on the bars. She also notched 10 top-10 finishes on the vault, eight on the bars, five on the balance beam and one on the floor exercise. Miller has been a phenominal specialist for the Eagles, ranking ninth in the MAC on the balance beam. THe Halifax, Nova Scotia native recorded seven top-ten finishes on the beam, including a second place accolade versus Western Michigan University.
SENIOR STARS: Seniors Kristen Yourick and Stacie Wood have been dominant forces for Eastern. Their experience and leadership has allowed the Green and White to excel throughout the 2012 season. Wood is ranked 20th on the bars and 25th on the floor in the MAC. She recorded a career-high 9.800 on the bars at the Eagle Invitational, March 10. Yourick ranks 34th in the MAC on the bars and 17th on the floor exercise. She also recorded a career-high 9.850 on the floor exercise at the the Eagle Invitational.
