Gymnastics Ties for Fifth at MAC Championships

The Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team earned a fifth place tie at the Mid-American Conference Championships, March 24, at the NIU Convocation Center in DeKalb, Ill. The Eagles recorded a team score of 193.150.

Central Michigan came in first recording a 195.675 followed by Kent State with a 195.225. Western Michigan finished in third posting a 195.000, while host Northern Illinois University recorded a 194.525. EMU and Bowling Green tied for fifth earning a 193.150 and Ball State rounded out the meet earning seventh place and a team score of 192.950.

Freshman Anna Willette (Pylesville, Md.-North Harford) led the Eagles on the vault posting a 9.825 earning a 10th place tie. Senior Amanda Fuller (Hamilton, Ont.-St Mary's) and Junior Kristina Kurkmilis (Eagleville, Pa.-Methacton) followed, recording a 9.750 and a 19th place tie. Sophomore Miranda Jarvis (Westminster, Md.-Westminster) tallied a 9.700 while fellow sophomore Kaylee Meyers (Saint Joseph, Mo.-Central) recorded a career-high 9.650 placing 29th and 33rd, respectively.

Willette also led on the uneven parallel bars recording a 9.775 and finished tied for sixth. Senior Stacie Wood (Brantford, Ont.-Brantford Collegiate Institute) recorded a 9.725 for her stellar performance on the bars earning a 13th place tie. Sophomores Taylor Patterson (Xenia, Ohio-Xenia) and Meyers tied for 23rd place posting a 9.625. Senior Kristen Yourick (Albuquerque, N.M.-La Cueva) followed with a 9.600 and a 29th place finish. Rounding out the line-up was Junior Camille Cicchini (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.-Royal Palm Beach Community) earning a 9.575 and a 32nd place finish for Eastern.

Meyers and Willette continued to shine, recording a 9.675 on the balance beam, earning a 14th place tie. Cassar tied for 20th for her performance on the beam, posting a 9.650. Senior Tracie Tamashiro (Honolulu, Hawaii-Kalani) helped the Eagles, recording a 9.600, while sophomore Shawna Ciaramella (Hamilton, Ont.-St. Mary CSS) and freshman Paulina Miller (Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada-Citadel High School) earned a 9.550.

Wood was the top performer for the Green and White on the floor exercise earning a 9.800 and a 14th place tie. Fuller recorded a 9.725 for her excellent performance placing in 26th. Junior Brittany Cassar (Kings Park, N.Y.-Kings Park) posted a 9.600, while Ciaramella earned a 9.550.
