RIO VERDE, Ariz. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University women's golf team finished in sixth place on the final leaderboard Sunday afternoon, March 11, at the 2012 Rio Verde Invitational. On the third and final day of competition the Eagles fired a team score of 306 to finish sixth in the standings. EMU's three-day total of 920 (306-308-306) kept them 20 strokes out of first place Kansas who recorded a final tally of 900.
Leading the way for the Green and White was junior Sarah Johnson (Wixom, Mich.-Walled Lake Central) who carded a one-over-par 73 on the final 18 holes. The junior from Wixom, Mich., finished the three-day tournament at 11-over 224 (78-73-73) to place in a four-way tie for sixth. It marked her seventh career top 10 showing and Johnson's fourth during the 2011-12 campaign.
Shannon Warner (Livonia, Mich.-Livonia Churchill-Michigan State) and Rushda Mallick (Cape Town, South Africa-Glenwood House-Cape Peninsula University of Technology) each followed Johnson, posting a 233 for 26th place. Meredith Fairbairn (Orangeville, Ontario, Canada-Westside Secondary School) was third for the Eagles recording a 77 giving her a three-round score of 234 (76-81-77). Rounding out the scoring for EMU was Alyssa Kwon (Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada-Richmond Hill) who fired a 79 to give her a final tally of 238 (78-81-79).
In a battle down to the final holes, Kansas emerged victorious by three strokes thanks to a record-sharing final round by Katy Nugent. The Jayhawks fired a team score of 291 on the final day to come from behind and take the team title, winning the tournament with a team score of 900.
One of the reasons for the surge was medalist runner-up Katy Nugent (220), who's final round 68 tied the mark for the lowest single round in tournament history. That accomplishment was not enough as Akron's Kristen Hill won medalist with a 54-hole score of 219, besting Nugent by a stroke.
Missouri State (903), which had the second lowest team score on Sunday (295) came just three strokes shy of forcing the first ever team playoff. Akron, which led the tournament through 36 holes, finished third (906) with Penn State (911) and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (919) rounding out the top five.
The tournament's 36-hole individual leader, Missouri State's Kelsey Welber, finished third (221), while Akron's Katie Jenior (223) and 18-hole leader Ryann White of TAMUCC tied for fourth.
EMU travels to Little Rock, Ark. for the UALR Golf Classic, March 26-27.
