WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (EMUEagles.com)–
The Eastern Michigan University baseball team continues a grueling stretch of nine road games in 10 days Friday-Sunday, March 2-4, with a pair of games against Marshall and Wake Forest. The Green and White will face both opponents Friday as part of a doubleheader beginning at noon and continuing at 4 p.m. EMU and Marshall will re-match at noon Saturday and Wake Forest will do the same Sunday at noon.

ALL-TIME WITH THE HERD: Eastern Michigan and Marshall will meet for the 23rd and 24th time this weekend, with the Eagles holding a 14-8 all-time series advantage over the Thundering Herd, who previously played in the MAC before joining Conference USA. Marshall enters the weekend with a 3-4 record, having posted wins over Bryant and Charleston Southern this season. Isaac Ballou (.412) and Adrian Farris (.412) each come into play hitting better than .400, with two other MU players averaging over .300.

WHAT ABOUT THOSE DEMON DEACONS: The Eagles and Wake Forest (5-4) will battle for the first time this weekend. One thing that pops out about the Demon Deacons (besides that peculiar name) is their offensive prowess through nine games. Wake is hitting at a .282 clip and possesses an OBP of .387 to go along with 44 walks (4.9 per game). The team has also swiped 15 bases in 17 attempts.

After losing four of their first five games, the Demon Deacons have won four straight following an undefeated weekend at the WF Invitational with wins over UMBC, Cininnati, Georgetown and UNC Asheville.

THIS GAME IS EASY: The Eagles swept the Mid-American Conference West Division weekly awards for the week ending, Feb. 26, the league office announced Wednesday, Feb. 29. EMU third baseman Ben Magsig claimed the MAC Player of the Week award, while starting pitcher Steve Weber took Pitcher of the Week accolades.

Magsig had a solid weekend against Oral Roberts University, registering a .538 OBP as a result of reaching base in 7-of-13 plate appearances.

Weber carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning in Saturday's 3-1 win over ORU. He earned the Eagles their first win of the season over six and two-thirds innings of work while giving up just two hits and an earned run with four strikeouts.

THAT'S MORE LIKE IT: EMU rebounded from Tuesday's heartbreaker at Duke to storm past North Carolina Central, 8-4, in the battle of the Eagles. The Green and White used pairs of runs in the fourth and sixth innings to pull ahead for good. Sam Ott blasted what proved to be the game-winning home run in the fourth inning on a day when he went 2-for-2 with three walks and a trio of runs scored.

OUT-DUKED: An eight-run offensive outburst fell short in a disappointing 9-8 walk-off loss to Duke Tuesday, Feb. 28, at Jack Coombs Field. The Eagles led, 8-0, after two innings but were outdone by the Blue Devils' four-run ninth inning that left the score in favor of the home team, 9-8. The Eagles fell to 0-3 all-time against Duke, who evened its record at 5-5.

IT'S A SCORCHER OUT THERE!: Sam Ott has not needed much, if any, time to recapture the offensive knack he displayed in his first as a member of the starting lineup in 2011. The redshirt sophomore has cranked out nine hits in 22 at-bats (.409) including a pair of doubles and a home run.

Ott's long ball was the game-winner in Wednesday's 8-4 victory over NC Central. When Ott is not hitting to get on base, he is drawing walks with six free passes in seven contests. His 1.172 OPS is by far the best on the team and is well ahead of his career average of .957 in that category.

GLOVER SETS PERSONAL BEST: Reliever Jordan Glover's eight strikeout performance Friday, Feb. 24, against ORU marked a career-best for the native of Toronto, Ontario. His previous high for punch-outs was six set back on March 29, 2011, against Cleveland State University.

FREELANCERS: Patience is a virtue, especially when that virtue puts you 90 feet closer to home. In seven games, the Eagles have drawn 38 walks for an average of 5.4 free passes per contest. Eastern Michigan walked a total of 234 times last season for second-most in the Mid-American Conference to trail only Central Michigan (235).

SHOW ME THE WAY TO GO HOME: When leading off an inning, EMU batters are reaching base at a .492 clip. Sam Ott and Ben Magsig are each 4-for-5 (.800) as the first to the plate, while Austin Williams and Daniel Russell are close behind at 3-for-4 (.750).

HITTING STREAKS: Lee Longo and Sam Ott stand alone in the EMU clubhouse as the only to players to have notched at least one hit in all seven games this season. Longo is one game shy of tying a career-best eight straight contests with at least one knock, while Ott's personal record is 10 games. Brent Ohrman is also riding a six-game hitting streak.

RECORD WATCH: Outfielder Brent Ohrman has a chance to work his way up the EMU records list in several offensive categories this season. His 20 stolen bases last season gave him 32 for his career, good for the 17th-most all-time. He is just one swiped bag behind Tim Clouse (2003-07) and two in back of Jeff Hehr (2005-07) and Trumaine Riley (2003-07) for 14th place. The native of Adrian, Mich. also has 28 career doubles to put him at 23rd in EMU laurels for that category.

Ben Magsig's eight walks this season have increased his career total to 75 and have earned him a tie for 14th place all-time with Jeff Washington (1972-75). The record is held by EMU great Glenn Gulliver, who received 140 free passes from 1973-76.

ONE IS BETTER THAN NONE: Eastern Michigan's three-game stint in Tulsa, Okla., Feb. 24-26, against Oral Roberts finished with some mixed results. The Eagles went 1-2 on the weekend, and were out-scored, 26-10, by ORU. The Golden Eagles took the first and third games of the series by scores of 11-6 and 14-1, while EMU salvaged the middle game, 3-1, on stellar pitching from Steve Weber and Neil Butara.
