Wake Forest Box Score.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (EMUEagles.com)— The Eastern Michigan University baseball team split a double header here Friday, March 2, at the Wake Forest Baseball Park. The Eagles rallied to beat Marshall in game one, 6-5, and gave up a lead late in the second game against Wake Forest to fall, 8-7.
Joe Battistelli (1-2) recorded the win for EMU (3-6) against Marshall (3-5) in six innings of work. Collin Taylor also picked up his first save after tossing three scoreless innings.
In game two, Steve Weber notched a second-straight quality start, but it would be freshman Ryan Lavoie (0-1) who ended up saddled with the loss as Wake Forest (6-4) used a seven-run eighth inning to crawl away with the win.
Lee Longo and Bo Kinder each turned in solid offensive performances. Longo finished the day 4-for-7 with a pair of RBI to give him a team-leading seven. Kinder was 4-for-8 with two doubles for an EMU-best five.
Sam Ott played long ball for a second time this season and hit two doubles in the loss to Wake Forest.
The Eagles will be back in action Saturday afternoon, March 3, when they rematch with the Thundering Herd at noon.
GAME ONE—MARSHALL
Longo went a perfect 3-for-3 with an RBI, while Kinder hit 3-for-4 with an RBI, a walk and a stolen base in a nail-biting 6-5 triumph over the Thundering Herd. Ohrman was hitless in three attempts but notched the game-winning RBI on a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning and stole his first bag of the season.
Eagles' starter Battistelli (1-2) recovered from surrendering five runs in the first three innings by allowing just three hits and no MU runs over his final three innings of work. In all, the junior lasted six innings and gave up nine hits including three home runs.
Left-handed reliever Taylor tossed the final three innings to pick up his first save of the season. The senior looked strong in his fourth outing of 2012, allowing just one hit while striking out three batters.
Lance Elder (0-1) took his first loss this season after allowing three runs in the sixth inning in a relief role. The Herd was led offensively by Alfredo Brito who went 2-for-3 with three RBI and two home runs. Thor Meeks was also a perfect 4-for-4 on the afternoon.
Nathan Gomez homered with two outs in the first to give Marshall the early 1-0 lead.
Eastern Michigan loaded the bases with one out in bottom half of the opening frame, but an Ott line drive labeled for right field was snagged by the MU first baseman Gomez who stepped on the bag to complete the unassisted double play.
Marshall added to its lead in the second off a lead-off solo shot by Brito and a sacrifice fly from John Gandolfo. Brito played long-ball again in the third inning with a two-run homer to put the Herd ahead, 5-0.
EMU responded with its first run in the bottom of the third with a Longo RBI single. Then in the fourth inning, Tucker Rubino drew a leadoff walk and Austin Williams tallied his first double of the year to put runners at second and third with nobody out. Both runners scored as Daniel Russell hit in Rubino and Williams crossed the plate on a wild pitch. The deficit was down to two runs, 5-3, after four innings.
A three-run sixth inning gave the Green and White its first lead of the game, 6-5. Rubino led off the frame by taking Elder deep for his first homer of the season. Kinder then notched his second hit of the day, an RBI double, to plate Russell. Ohrman's sacrifice fly scored Adam Dennison and put EMU in the lead.
The Herd put a runner on base in both the seventh and eighth innings, but Taylor notched a double play to end the scoring threat on each occasion.
The Eagles looked to add some insurance runs with the bases full and two outs in the eighth, but Marshall's Terrence Moore snuck strike three past the swinging bat of pinch hitter Kyle Klein to keep it a one-run affair.
After recording the first out in the ninth, Taylor hit Tripp Faulk. Faulk's pinch runner, Eric Semeniuk, stole second to put the tying run in scoring position. Semeniuk would not come any closer to scoring, however, as Taylor struck out the side to earn EMU the win.
GAME TWO—WAKE FOREST
Weber had another stellar pitching performance as EMU's game two starter, but the bullpen could not preserve a six-run lead in an 8-7 setback to Wake Forest. The right-hander allowed just one run and scattered three hits while striking out six in a no-decision.
EMU led, 7-1, headed into the bottom of the eighth inning, but Wake Forest sent 12 men to the plate and scored seven times to sneak away with the one-run win.
Lavoie (0-1) recorded the loss, giving up four runs despite achieving the rare feat or striking out four batters in one inning. Unfortunately, one of those strikeouts was on a wild pitch which plated the Wake Forest's winning run.
Ott hit his second home run of the season and went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Bo Kinder went 1-for-4 including his second double of the afternoon.
Niko Spezial (1-0) picked up the victory or the Demon Deacons in two innings of work and Michael Dimock recorded his third save with a one-two-three ninth.
The Eagles spotted Weber a five-run lead before he even had a chance to step on the mound. As in the first game, Longo knocked in EMU's opening run with a single. After Magsig scored on a passed ball, Ott notched his first hit of the day, a double, to drive in Longo. Ott and Rubino also came home in the first inning as the Eagles took a 5-0 edge on the Demon Deacons.
A muffed throw by first baseman Carlos Lopez allowed Russell to reach second base with one out in the fourth. After Russell advanced to third on a wild pitch, Dennison drove him in with a single for the catcher's first RBI of the season. EMU increased its lead to 6-0.
Meanwhile, Weber was quietly building his way toward another quality start. He gave up just two hits through the first five innings and stranded a pair of baserunners who reached due to EMU fielding errors.
Wake Forest did make the Green and White pay for a defensive mishap in the sixth inning, when Mac Williamson scored after reaching base on an error to make it a 6-1 contest.
Ott's homer added to EMU's advantage to lead off the eighth inning. The blast put EMU ahead, 7-1, and seemingly in control of the game.
However, as Weber exited after the seventh inning, Wake Forest's offense came alive on youngster relievers Ben Dartnell and Lavoie in the eighth. Dartnell failed to record an out and was charged with a trio of earned runs. Lavoie completed the inning, but not before giving up four runs including the go-ahead tally on a wild pitch.
Eastern Michigan went down in order in the ninth inning.
