PEORIA, Ariz. (EMUEagles.com) -- After posting a score of 590 (297-293) in the first day of competition, the Eastern Michigan University women's golf team shot a 294 on Monday, dropping them to ninth place overall at the Westbrook Invitational. The Eagles managed an 884 (297-293-294) overall for the tournament, while it was No. 49 Illinois that claimed the top spot with a team score of 853 (288-282-283).
The 54-hole tournament, hosted by Wisconsin, featured 12 schools, including the winning sqaud from Illinois, at 11 under par. Texas Tech, at eight under, was the only other squad under par throughout the invitational.
Eastern Michigan was led by Sarah Johnson (Wixom, Mich.-Walled Lake Central) on Monday with a 71, which put her in 11th place overall for the tournament, at even-par, 216 for the tournament. Rushida Mallick (Cape Town, South Africa-Glendwood House-Cape Peninsula University of Technology) also notched a 71 on Monday, putting her in a tie for 36th overall with fellow Eagle Shannon Warner (Livonia, Mich.-Livonia Churchill-Michigan State) who shot an 80. Corey Crossan (London, Ontario, Canada-Mother Teresa Catholic Secondary School) notched 74 moving her into a tie for 40th place with a total score of 225. Meredith Fairbairn (Orangeville, Ontario, Canada-Westside Secondary School) shot a 78, putting her tied for 44th with a 226, while Alyssa Kwon (Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada-Richmond Hill) took a 74 giving her a 230 for the tournament, placing her tied for 53rd.
Illinois' Nora Lucas sit the individual lead on Monday by shooting a 68. The four-under performance gave her a 205 overall score, two strokes ahead of a pair of golfers from Texas Tech.
EMU is next in action Saturday, Feb. 3, when they start competition at the Red Rocks Invitational in Sedona, Ariz.
