Women's Swimming and Diving Heads to MAC Championships

Eagles will travel to Ohio for the three-day championships hosted by University of Akron, Feb. 23-25
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — This Thursday, Feb. 23, the Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving team will head to Akron, Ohio to compete in the 2012 Mid-American Conference Swimming and Diving Championships. The three-day championships will feature two sessions per day, with the first beginning at 11 a.m. and the second session commencing at 7 p.m.
The Eagles will seek their third conference title in program history, with its two championships occurring in the 2006-07 and 2005-06 campaigns.
In the Green and White's first program championship, The Eagles climbed back from a 23-point deficit in the final day to finish a slim 11 points ahead of second-place, four-time defending MAC champion Miami. Then-sophomore Madeleine Pilchard earned three individual MAC Championships and was named MAC Women's Swimmer of the Year. She was also named to the All-MAC first team alongside teammate Sarah Chrzanowski. Chrzanowski finished with the top score on the one-meter diving board totaling 306.2 points, setting a new meet and pool record at Akron's Ocasek Natatorium. The Eagles had six members named to the All-MAC Second Team that season, with Lindsey Hayden, Claire Letendre, Chantelle Lonsdale, Gretchen Plamondon, Catherine Lee Ha and Becky Renkola each picking up individual honors. Head Coach Peter Linn, then in his second year at the helm, was named MAC Women's Swimming Coach of the Year, while Buck Smith earned MAC Women's Diving Coach of the Year.
During the 2006-07 campaign, the program earned its second consecutive title after EMU finished with 655 points, ahead of second place Ohio (618) and third place Miami (596). Pilchard earned her second consecutive MAC Swimmer of the Year award, while Chrzanowski was named MAC Diver of the Year. The Green and White had nine members named to the All-MAC squads, with Pilchard, Chrzanowksi, Ashley Durand and Renkola garnering first team honors. Lee Ha, Letendre, Lonsdale, Alissa Ricard and Sheila Carson were named to the All-MAC second team.
The Eagles head into the weekend at an even 5-5 record and a 2-3 mark in MAC meets with a number of athletes currently owning individual top-five times in the conference.
Briana Emig posted the fourth-best time in the 200 freestyle (1:51.04 vs. Miami) and the quickest mark in the 500 freestyle, an NCAA consideration time of 4:44.75, and the best time in the 1,000 free of 10:03.37. She also recorded the fastest time in the 1,650 free, an impressive 16:03.51 that also sits fifth in the NCAA Division I ranks. The junior has the fastest time in the 400 Individual Medley (4:15.87) and sits in second in the 200 IM (2:03.37), while teammate Jacquelyn Swartz ranks third in that respective event with her time of 2:04.27.
Helena Tolic recorded the fifth-fastest time of 2:02.23 in the 200 backstroke at the EMU invitational, Dec. 2.
In the 200 breaststroke, Monica Dorszewski sits fifth thanks to a 2:20.25 performance at the EMU Invitational this winter.
Swartz and Jessie Godlewski rank fourth and fifth, respectively in the 200 butterfly event. Both captured their ranks after racing to times of 2:02.05 and 2:02.64 this season at the EMU Invite.
On the three meter boards, Hendricks' score of 346.20 is best in the conference this season, while Danielle Hulvey owns the second-highest mark of 332.93. The duo also sit in the top two spots for the one meter dive, as Hulvey ranks first with a her 317.10 performance and Hendricks runner-up with a 301.28 effort against Ohio.
