Eagles in Fifth After Day One of MAC Championships

AKRON, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving team currently sits in fifth place with 134 points after kicking off the 2012 Mid-American Conference Swimming and Diving Championships today, Feb. 23, at the Oliver J. Ocasek Natatorium in Akron, Ohio.
The foursome of Sara Ghaffari, Meghan Richardson, Jessie Godlewski and Jacquelyn Swartz raced to a ninth place, 1:34.51 finish in the 200 freestyle relay to open the first session of the championships. Their efforts mark the fastest time for EMU in that event this season.
Briana Emig placed third in the 500 freestyle after touching the wall in 4:47.59. Teammate Wesley Blassneck took 14th in that event, completing the distance in 4:56.80.
In the 200 individual medley, Jacquelyn Swartz led all EMU swimmers with her sixth-place, 2:03.33 performance. Jessie Godlewski took 11th in 2:03.14.
Ghaffari was the fastest EMU performer in the 50 freestyle. She raced to a 24.20 finish in the finals this afternoon.
Kelly Hendricks took home the Eagles first MAC title in the one meter dive. She posted a combined six-dive score of 311.00. Her final dive helped claim an advantage over Ohio's Mary Rose Hillstrom who fell just short of the mark.
Lauren Dark took seventh in the one meter event with a 284.35 effort this evening. Soquel Rey placed 12th with a score of 275.95
The evening's final event was the 400 medley relay. The Eagles took eighth this evening after Amanda Keifer, Emig, Swartz and Godlewski combined for a finish of 3:46.39.
The Eagles will return to action tomorrow for day two of the championships. The first session is slated to begin at 11 a.m.
