No. 3 EMU fell to No. 1 Ball State, 3.5-2.5, in the championship match
Complete Bracket.
DADE CITY, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's golf team took second place at the 2012 Mid-American Match Play Championship at Lake Jovita South Course in Florida. The Eagles beat sixth-seeded Bowling Green State University and seventh-ranked Miami University before falling to top-seeded Ball State University by a score of 3.5-2.5 in the championship.
Sophomore Brian Churchill-Smith (Oakville, Ontario, Canada-Oakville Trafalgar) fell to Tyler Merkel, 3&2, and senior Derek East (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada-St. Paul's-University of New Orleans) dropped a 3&2 decision to put the Eagles in an early hole.
Junior Casey Olsen (Okemos, Mich.-Okemos-Oakland University) stormed backed with a 3&1 victory against TJ Carpenter and Zach MacDougall (Coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada -Centennial) then tied the team score with a 3&1 decision over Tony Lazzara. Then freshman Brian Burt (Dimondale, Mich.Holt) halved with Brodie Williams to give each side a half-point.
The tournament would came down to the final pairings, with freshman Alex Jones (Dewitt, Mich.-Dewitt) dropping a 2&1 decision to Joe Gasser to award the Cardinals the team tile.
In other action, Northern Illinois finished in third place with a 4.5-1.5 victory over Miami. Toledo knocked off Akron, 3.5-2.5, for fifth place and Ohio edged Bowling Green, 5-1, in the seventh place match.
Schools were competing in teams of six with the seeds determined by their current GolfStat rankings. Each of the six matches was worth one point to the winner. If the competitors end up all-square after 18 holes, each school received a ½ point. The school with the most points after the six matches won.
Unlike stroke play, in which the unit of scoring is the total number of strokes taken over one or more rounds of golf, match play scoring consisted of individual holes won, halved or lost. On each hole, the most that can be gained is one point. Golfers play as normal, counting the strokes taken on a given hole. The golfer with the lowest score on a given hole receives one point. If the golfers tie, then the hole is halved. Also, once a player is "up" more holes than there are holes remaining to play the match is over.
