DADE City, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's golf team opened its 2012 spring season with a 6.0-0.0 victory over Bowling Green State University Monday, Feb. 13, in the first round of the 2012 Mid-American Match Play Championship at the par 72, 7,153 yard Lake Jovita Golf Course. The Eagles followed it up with a 3.5-2.5 victory over seventh-seeded Miami University in round two.
A frost delay in the opening round did not slow down the Eagles, as the Green and White were the only squad to sweep every first round match up. Sophomore Brian Churchill-Smith (Oakville, Ontario, Canada-Oakville Trafalgar) notched a 3&2 victory over Charlie Olson. Junior Casey Olsen (Okemos, Mich.-Okemos-Oakland University), senior Derek East (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada-St. Paul's-University of New Orleans) and Zach MacDougall (Coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada-Centennial) also each cruised to easy victories. Meanwhile, freshmen Alex Jones (Dewitt, Mich.-Dewitt) and Brian Burt (Dimondale, Mich.Holt) were each able to eke out hard-fought 1-up victories.
In other first round action, Ball State defeated Ohio, 4.5-1.5, Northern Illinois bested Toledo, 4-2, and Miami downed Akron, 4-2.
Churchill-Smith defeated Miami's Ben Peacock, 2-up, to open second round play in the winner's bracket. East then finished 1-up in Austin Kelly and Burt notched a 3&2 victory over Brantley Kushner. Olsen tied with Brett Tomfohrdeto give EMU the half-point and secure the EMU victory.
The Eagle and RedHawks were the only teams to complete second round action as play was haulted to darkness. Round two will continue Tuesday morning, followed immediately by round three. Live scoring for the rounds are available at BallStateSports.com.
Eight different MAC schools are participate in the match play championship. Joining EMU is Akron, Ball State, Bowling Green, Miami, Northern Illinois, Ohio and Toledo.
Schools are competing in teams of six with the seeds determined by their current GolfStat rankings. Each of the six matches is worth one point to the winner. If the competitors end up all-square after 18 holes, each school received ½ point. The school with the most points after the six matches wins.
Unlike stroke play, in which the unit of scoring is the total number of strokes taken over one or more rounds of golf, match play scoring consists of individual holes won, halved or lost. On each hole, the most that can be gained is one point. Golfers play as normal, counting the strokes taken on a given hole. The golfer with the lowest score on a given hole receives one point. If the golfers tie, then the hole is halved. Also, once a player is "up" more holes than there are holes remaining to play the match is over.
