Final Results

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team began its 2012-13 campaign with an impressive win as host of the Eagle Holiday Meet, Dec. 7, at Bob Parks Track.

The Green and White's showing of 189.50 points more than doubled second place Central Michigan University, who finished with 92 points. The University of Toledo (62 points) finished third, while Bowling Green State University and Oakland University finished with 29 and 28.50 points, respectively.

While veterans racked up points for the Eagles, EMU Head Coach Sue Parks' freshman class made immediate impacts throughout the evening in their collegiate debuts.

Making her presence known in her EMU debut, freshman Brittany Crew (Toronto, Ontario, Canada-Birchmount Park) took first by shattering the school record in the shot put with a toss of 15.58 meters. The previous school record was 14.50 meters by Tammy Stall in 1990.

Last year's EMU NCAA Championship qualifier Asia Rawls (Waterford, Mich.-Waterford Mott) finished runner-up in a time of 1:13.8 for the 500-meter dash.

Freshman Alysha Newman (Delaware, Ontario, Canada-Mother Teresa) shined in her first collegiate meet by winning the pole vault with a leap of 3.80 meters. Jumping 3.50 meters, Meghan Powers (Livonia, Mich.-Franklin) and Ellie Braidic (Pandora, Ohio-Pandora-Gilboa) tied for third.

In the long jump, four Eagles scored in the top six with freshman Makeda DeBardelaben (Saginaw, Mich.-Arthur Hill) finishing a team-high second with a 5.56-meter jump. Laila Foster (Apoka, Fla-Apoka), Tiara Oates (Rochester, Mich.-Stoney Creek) and Melanie Hill (Brooklyn Park, Minn.-Champlin Park) took third, fourth, and sixth respectively to score points for EMU.

Tatijana Jacobson (Woodville, Ohio-Woodmore) leaped 1.83 meters into the air to take first in the high jump.

In the 1000-meter run, the top two spots belong to the Green and White as Marina Manjon-Rivadulla (Barcelona, Spain-Escola University) won the event in 2:56.19 and Morgan Churchwell (Ada, Mich.-Forest Hills Central) followed in 2:57.10.

After a successful freshman season, sophomore Lydia Gomez-Diaz (Tarragona, Spain-IES Collblanc) placed in the first meet of the year, taking runner-up in the weight throw with a 16.34-meter toss.

The freshman duo of Morgan Yeadon (Indianapolis, Ind.-Pike) and Aaliyah McKinney (South Bend, Ind.-John Adams) took first and second in the 200-meter dash with times of 25.52 and 25.65, respectively. The tandem also placed second and third in the 60-meter dash with Yeadon securing the runner-up spot. Meanwhile, in the 60-meter hurdles, Eastern freshman Vanessa Clerveaux (Brockton, Mass.-Brockton) was victorious with a time of 8.57.

In the final individual event of the evening, the 3,000-meter run, Eastern swept the top four spots as Victoria Voronko (Moscow, Russia-University of Moscow) finished first in 10:01.52. Kayla Pfund (Utica, Mich.-Luthern High North), Rachel Quaintance (White Lake, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) and Cara Smock (Wyandotte, Mich.-Theodore Roosevelt) rounded out the top four spots in the race.

The Green and White will ring in the New Year when it's next in action as host of the EMU Triangular. Akron and Buffalo will come to Ypsilanti, Jan. 11, to compete at Bob Parks Track in Bowen Field House.
