Volleyball Closes Regular Season With Ball State and Toledo at Home

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University women's volleyball is now 17-13 and 7-7 in the Mid-American Conference on the season. The Green and White finishes the campaign with its final two matches at home. This week, the Eagles will play host to Ball State University Friday, Nov. 9, at 7 p.m. and then will welcome the University of Toledo Saturday, Nov. 10, at 7 p.m. for Senior Night.

ROLLING INTO THE MAC TOURNAMENT: The Eagles returned home last weekend to start their four-match homestreak to end the 2012 regular season campaign. After clinching a spot in the 2012 Mid-American Conference Volleyball Tournament with a pair of straight-set wins against Central Michigan University and Kent State University, the Green and White has won four of its last five matches as they head into the weekend.  The Eagles host Ball State University Friday, Nov. 9, at 7 p.m. and then welcome the University of Toledo Saturday, Nov. 10, at 7 p.m. for Senior Night.

ALL-TIME AGAINST THIS WEEKEND'S FIELD: EMU has taken on Ball State University 63 times, with the Cardinals holding a 22-41 edge. EMU and Ball State first squared-off in 1978 when Eastern was swept by the Cardinals, 3-0, Sept. 30. This year the Eagles took down the Cardinals in four sets, with Rachel Iaquaniello posting 21 kills to lead the Green and White, while Kristen Baker and Erin Short notched 14 kills apiece. Kim Hildreth added 56 assists in the four-set match.

Eastern Michigan University and the University of Toledo have faced-off 59 times over the years. The Eagles hold a commanding lead in the series, 47-12, in those matches. The Rockets and Eagles first met in 1976 during EMU's first year competing in volleyball. That year, Eastern swept UT in their first match, Oct. 9. Earlier this season, Eastern was able to top the Rockets in five sets on the road. Hildreth posted a career-high 61 assists, while picking up 16 digs. Iaquaniello notched a match-high 25 kills and 13 digs.

IMPROVE THE SEEDING: After sweeping a pair of matches last weekend, the Eagles now hold the No. 6 seed in the 2012 Mid-American Conference Volleyball Tournament. The Eagles are hoping for losses from both Northern Illinois University and Akron University which will help EMU improve to as high as the fourth seed in the tournamnent. This assumes the Eagles can pull off a pair of victories this weekend agaisnt BSU and UT.

SCOUTING THE CARDINALS: The Cardinals were selected to finish fourth in the Mid-American Conference West Division, but currently sit fifth. BSU is 13-14 on the season, and has posted a 6-8 record in the MAC. As a team, the Cardinals rank third in the MAC in hitting percentage (.221). They also rank third in assists per set (12.77), behind the second-ranked EMU Eagles at 12.94. The Cardinals also post 13.54 kills per set which is tied with Ohio University and Akron University for the third-most in the conference.

Lisa Scott ranks first in the Mid-American Conference in hitting percentage; she is hitting at a .333 clip in 100 sets played this season, while Kara Bate's 3.71 kills per set is good for fourth in the conference. Other individuals that are making their mark in conference play are Jacqui Seidel, who ranks third in the MAC in assists per game at 10.94, and Catie Fredrich, whose 4.93 digs per set is good for second in the conference.

SCOUTING THE ROCKETS: After being picked to finish sixth in the MAC West Division, the Toledo Rockets are heading into the final week of the regular season 8-19, with a conference-worst 2-12 record. The Rockets rank in the bottom-three in six-of-seven team categories within the Mid-American Conference. UT does ranks fifth in the MAC in blocks per set this season, posting 2.09 per frame. Toledo trails Ohio (2.71), Buffalo (2.40), Bowling Green (2.28) and Akron (2.11).

Individually, the Rockets have a few standouts performing well in the conference. Dakota Harkins is posting the eighth-best attack percentage at .292, while also ranking fourth in blocks at 1.10 per set. Adria Pryor's 10.33 assists per set are good for sixth in the conference.

AMONG THE NATIONAL RANKS: Eagles' senior, Rachel Iaquaniello, ranks 26th in the NCAA for the most kills per set. The Plymouth, Mich. native is averaging 4.29 kills per set which trails the national leader Tyler Henderson of Tulsa who is averaging 5.13 kills per set. Iaquaniello also ranks 33rd nationally in points per set with 4.79.

As a team, the Green and White ranks 34th nationally in digs per set with 17.30. Penn leads the nation in digs, averaging 21.68 per set, while Western Michigan leads the MAC with 17.41 30th nationally).

MORE RECORDS TO BREAK: Eastern Michigan senior, Rachel Iaquaniello, has already set multiple records in her career at EMU but she has a few more in her sights. The Plymouth, Mich. native has 1,247 career digs, which ranks ninth all-time at Eastern. It's the career-sets-played record that Iaquaniello can still reach this season. She currently has played 495 sets, second-most all-time, in her career, and 506 is the record held by 2011 senior, Ashley Mason. With 121 career aces, Iaquaniello also ranks as ninth all-time in that category. Camila Olaio has the most with 233.

ATOP THE CONFERENCE: Eastern has been near the top of the conference in multiple categories both as a team and individually.
  The Eagles are second in digs per set, posting 17.30 digs while Western Michigan leads at 17.41.

Individually, Eastern has a few student-athletes showing off their skill on the hardwood. Rachel Iaquaniello is leading the MAC in kills at 4.29 per set, while also ranking ninth in aces per set at 0.25. Kim Hildreth sits at 10th in the MAC for assists per set, with 7.75.
