Volleyball Comes Up Empty in Straight Set Loss to Cardinals

Senior Night set for 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, at the Convo
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team dropped its second-to-last home match of the 2012 campaign Friday, Nov. 9, in straight sets (23-25, 22-25, 28-30) to the Ball State University Cardinals at the Convocation Center.
With the loss Eastern falls to 17-14 and 7-8 in Mid-American Conference play, while Ball State moved to 14-14 and 7-8 in conference action.
Rachel Iaquaniello (Plymouth, Mich.-Dearborn Divine Child) led the EMU offensive attack with 18 kills, while Kristen Baker (Mentor, Ohio-Mentor) added nine of her own. Alyssa Davis (Kalamazoo, Mich.-Plainwell) and Kim Hildreth (Novi, Mich.-Novi) split the setting duties, picking up 22 and 19 assists, respectively. Sierra Reed (Parker City, Ind.-Wapahani) led the Eagles with 23 digs, while Iaquaniello added 17 and Corynne Smith (Norwalk, Ohio-St. Paul) posted 15.
The Eagles dropped the opening set, 23-25. EMU struggled from the offensive side, posting a .170 attack percentage (14-5-53), while the Cardinals hit .191 (14-5-47) in the opening frame. Baker and Iaquaniello each posted five kills, while Crawshaw added a pair. Reed picked up seven digs in the frame.
Eastern fell behind 2-0 after dropping the second frame, 22-25. Ball State posted a .238 attack percentage (14-4-42). Crawshaw, Iaquaniello and Erin Short (Orrville, Ohio-Orrville) each notched three kills in the set, but Paige Roback (Maumee, Ohio-Notre Dame Academy) posted a set-high five. Davis added 10 assists to her total in the frame.
Despite taking the Cardinals into extra points, the Eagles dropped the final set, 28-30.
Iaquaniello had 10 third-set kills, while Short added four and Baker notched three. Hildreth posted 16 of her 19 assists in the final set of the match.
Eastern closes out its 2012 regular season campaign Saturday, Nov. 10. The Eagles host the University of Toledo Rockets for Senior Night at 7 p.m. The match will be streamed on Eagle All-Access.
