Kelsey Murphy, Lois Schoof and Sylvie Williams commit to EMU
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Eastern Michigan University Head Women's Golf Coach Sandy Wagner announced Friday, Nov. 30, that Kelsey Murphy (Plymouth, Mich.–Plymouth), Lois Schoof (Amsterdam, Netherlands–Univ. of Amsterdam) and Sylvie Williams (Christchurch, New Zealand-Lincoln) will be joining the Eagles for the 2013-14 season.
Murphy will join the team as a freshman in 2013-14 as one of the most decorated high school students-athletes in southeastern Michigan. Despite having only played golf for the past five years, she won the Division 1 individual title in October by one stroke with a two-day total of 148 (73-75) and led her team to the first team state title of any sport in school history. Murphy has piled up medals and accolades throughout her career including being a 1.1 handicap, twice crowned the regional champion and a three times the conference champion.
A three time All-State Super Team member and an All-State member for one year, Murphy finished inside the top-20 at the 2010 Optimist Internationals. In 2011 she was the Golf Association of Michigan (GAM) Junior Amateur runner-up and this past summer she again made it to the final four. After setting the high school record with a three-under 69, Murphy finished in the top eight of the GAM's 2012 Women's Amateur.
“Kelsey has always shown a maturity and a self-confidence that you just can't teach,” responded Coach Wagner, as she speaks about having known Murphy since she was 12-years-old. “She sets the bar high and knows what it takes to achieve it. She is one of the hardest workers I have ever seen and practices nearly every day She is an outstanding example of who an EMU Eagle is and she knows what it represents. She will wear the Green and White with pride. She is an real impact player who has great potential and I cannot wait to coach this wonderful young lady.”
Schoof is a transfer from the University of Amsterdam and will join the squad in January with three years of eligibility remaining. Ranked 10th among amateurs in the Netherlands, she has achieved victories in the National Foursome Championships, the National Stroke Play Championships and the Match Play Club Championships. Schoof, who boasts a handicap of 3.5, finished third in the National Match Play Championships.
“Lois is an exceptional young lady who will be a great addition to our program. She will be adding much needed depth to our squad in January,” said Wagner. “She has set her goals high coming to the U.S. to compete in college and I have no doubt she will be an influential member of our squad in the years to come.”
Williams is a transfer from Lincoln University and will have junior eligibility in 2013-14. Currently ranked 13th in New Zealand's Order of Merit. She has played on the New Zealand Golf Regional Development team since 2010 and currently plays as the squad's top player. Williams has turned in strong performances in all the national top events including the New Zealand Amateurs, the New Zealand Stroke Play and the New Zealand Open with a scoring average of 73.90.
Williams also won the Canterbury Match Play Championships, and the Canterbury Four Ball Best Ball, qualified for the New Zealand Womens Open and had the best record at the national tournament for the Canterbury Team.
“Sylvie is a very determined young lady that will help the Eagles both on and off the golf course," added Wagner. "She knows what it takes to work hard and see the reward of it. With Sylvie's experience playing in New Zealand and with all her successes playing golf, I am very confident in her ability as a golfer to help our squad immediately.”
The Eagles' spring campaign gets under way in February when the squad travels to Blanco, Texas , to compete in the Jim West Challenge, Feb. 17-18.
