EMU OPENS 38th MAC HOME SEASON VS. CENTRAL MICHIGAN: The 2011-12 Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team will open its 38th Mid-American Conference home season Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2012, against the Central Michigan University Chippewas in the Convocation Center.
For the Eagles, the CMU game will mark the end of a grueling nine-game road swing that ended Saturday, Jan. 7, with a 47-40 MAC West Division win at Northern Illinois.
First-year Head Coach Rob Murphy's Eagles enter the CMU game with a 6-9 overall record and a 1-0 MAC mark.

ABOUT THE CHIPPEWAS: Central Michigan is currently 6-8 overall and 1-0 in MAC play after posting an 85-69 win over Toledo Saturday, Jan. 7, in Mount Pleasant, Mich.

EMU IN MAC HOME OPENERS:  The EMU-CMU game Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2012, will be Eastern's 38th Mid-American Conference home opener. The Eagles are 19-18 in their first home game of the MAC season.

STRONG DOWN THE STRETCH:  Senior guard Darrell Lampley (Linden, N.J.-Linden-Lakeland (Ohio) C.C.) turned in an outstanding effort down the stretch Saturday, Jan. 7, in a 47-40 win at Northern Illinois.  With EMU leading by one, 41-40, with under two minutes left, the EMU defense held the Huskies scoreless the rest of the way. While NIU was not posting any points, the Huskies were forced to foul and they chose the wrong player in Lampley.  The 5-foot-10 point guard calmly sank all six of his free throw attempts over the game's final 1:34 to preserve the win for the Eagles. Lampley would end up with a 16-point afternoon, including making 9-of-10 charity tosses.

DEFENSE PAYING OFF:  EMU's defensive effort this season is starting to pay big dividends for Head Coach Rob Murphy's squad. The Eagles are limiting their opponents to an average of 60.9 points a game in 2011-12, a figure that currently ranks second in the Mid-American Conference.

MOVING UP IN THE MAC STATS PICTURE:  As a team, the Eagles are in the top half of the Mid-American Conference in four categories heading into the Central Michigan game Wednesday, Jan. 11.  Eastern is second in scoring defense (60.9), fourth in free throw percentage (.702), fifth in 3-point field goal percentage defense (.315) and sixth in field goal percentage defense (.416).  Individually, senior point guard Darrell Lampley (Linden, N.J.-Linden-Lakeland (Ohio) C.C.) is seventh in scoring (14.4) and second in free throw percentage (.869) and junior forward Jamell Harris (Euclid, Ohio-Euclid) is 11th in rebounding (6.3).

MILESTONES:  Several EMU players have hit milestone or are very close after the first 15 games of the 2011-12 season.
Senior guard Antonio Green (Inkster, Mich.-Dearborn Heights Robichaud) has played in 107 games for the Eagles while earning 57 starts.  He has scored 591points to tie Chuck King (1984-88) for 77th in the EMU record books, his 259 career rebounds total is good for 72nd and his 105 three-point field goals is good for 13th.
Junior forward Jamell Harris (Euclid, Ohio-Euclid) is 64th in career rebounds with 291 and his 116 career blocked shots is good for third, just four away from second place Bryan Nolan's 120. Junior guard Derek Thompson (Detroit, Mich.-Melvindale-SEMO) has recorded 81 triples in his career to rank 18th all time. Thompson has also passed the 300-point mark with 344 in his 41-game EMU career.

MOVING PAST 400: Senior guard Darrell Lampley (Linden, N.J.-Linden-Lakeland (Ohio) C.C.) has scored 411 points in his 46-game EMU career.

FINALLY RETURNING FOR A HOME GAME:  The Eagles finished a grueling nine-game, 45-day road swing Saturday, Jan. 7, at Northern Illinois.  Eastern will finally get a chance to play on its home court when the Eagles host the Chippewas of Central Michigan, Wednesday, Jan. 11, at 7 p.m.

LOW TOTAL: EMU's nine-point first half at Virgina Tech, Dec. 22, is a modern-day low for an EMU men's basketball squad. The Eagles' 36-point scoring effort in a loss at Purdue, Dec. 11, was the lowest point total for an EMU men's basketball team since the then-Hurons scored 34 in a 54-34 loss in the opening game of the 1956-57 season, Dec. 5, 1956 at home against Hope.

EAGLES FACE FOES FROM 10 LEAGUES:  The 2011-12 EMU men's basketball team will square off against teams from at least 12 different leagues. In addition to its Mid-American Conference schedule, the Eagles will meet teams from the Big Ten (Michigan State and Purdue), the SWAC (Texas Southern), Sun Belt (Ark.-Little Rock), Horizon (UIC), Patriot (Colgate), Missouri Valley (Drake), Big South (Radford), Big East (Syracuse), Summit (IUPUI), ACC (Virginia Tech), West Coast (Santa Clara). The Eagles will also meet a Northeast Conference team (Wagner) or a Mountain West team (Air Force) in the second day of the Cable Car Classic in Santa Clara, Calif.

EMU EXCELS IN THE CLASSROOM:  The EMU men's basketball team turned in the best academic semester in the past 15 years with a team cumulative average of 2.92 for the 2011 fall semester first-year Head Coach Rob Murphy has announced.
Included in that outstanding GPA was the fact that eight members of the EMU men's basketball team posted a 3.0 GPA or better for the semester.
away from home in November-December during a rough nine-game road schedule but our players stayed disciplined to make sure their academic needs were met while traveling. I credit my staff along with the academic support office for doing an outstanding job.”
Junior transfer Daylen Harrison, who is practicing with the team but sitting out the year as a transfer,  led the squad with a 3.80 GPA while freshman guard Antoine Chandler  recorded a 3.14 GPA and junior guard Derek Thompson posted a 3.12.  Senior Antonio Green had a 3.00, redshirt sophomore Austin Harper had a 3.06; senior Kamil Janton had a 3.08, and  redshirt sophomore guard J.R. Sims (Ft. Wayne, Ind.-Snider) posted a 3.00.  Manager Marvin Skipper, a former player who was on a medical hardship, recorded a 3.40.
