EASTERN RENEWS THE RIVALRY WITH NORTHERN ILLINOIS SUNDAY: The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team welcomes Northern Illinois University to the Convocation Center Sunday afternoon, Jan. 8, for a Mid-American Conference West Division contest. The opening tip is scheduled for 2:07 p.m.
Eastern Michigan enters the game with a mark of 8-6 after a heartbreaking 54-51 loss at Ball State University in Muncie, Ind., Jan. 5. The Huskies are 6-7 on the season after a 86-67 home setback to Central Michigan University, Jan. 5.

A SPOTLIGHT ON THE HUSKIES: The Jan. 8 contest marks the 36th meeting between the Northern Illinois Huskies and Eastern Michigan Eagles, who first played during the 1981-82 season. Eastern leads the overall series, 26-9, and has won 21 of the last 24 games over the Cardinal and Black. Head Coach AnnMarie Gilbert has tallied a 7-1 mark against NIU since taking over the program in 2007-08.

THE BRIGHT LIGHTS OF TELEVISION: Sunday's contest will be shown regionally on SportsTime Ohio, Comcast Michigan and Comcast Chicago with Mike Cairns providing the play-by-play and Jacki Windon serving as the analyst. If you cannot find the game through your cable provider, Eagle All-Access will also video stream the broadcast with subscription packages starting at just $5.95.

LAND OF LINCOLN: The Eagles' have been dominant versus schools from the State of Illinois, posting a 10-game winning streak against the Land of Lincoln dating back to the 2008-09 campaign. Eastern Michigan's last loss to a team that hailed from the state was a 69-62 overtime setback to Northern Illinois, Jan. 17, 2008.

FAMILIAR FACE: The Eagles' meeting with the Huskies Sunday will bring a familiar face back to the Convocation Center.  Currently a senior forward for NIU, Kim Davis played the 2008-09 season at EMU as a walk-on, where she started 10 games and played in 24. A resident of Evanston, Ill., Davis left EMU to attend NIU, an in-state institution with lower tuition. She did not play basketball in 2009-10. NIU Head Coach Kathi Bennett discovered Davis and convinced her to join the Huskies.

STRUGGLING FROM DOWNTOWN: The Eagles' three-point field goal shooting ability has been the team's Achilles heel in 2011-12, as the Eagles are shooting just 24.6 percent from the outside. EMU has made two-or-fewer shots from beyond the long line on five occasions this season and is a combined 2-3 in those contests. The distance change to 20-feet, 8-inches for this season may have contributed to EMU's struggles. At this point during the 2009-10 campaign, EMU was averaged 6.9 long-range shots per game compared to 3.1 this season.

STREAKY FROM THE OUTSIDE: For just the third time in the past 296 games, Eastern Michigan did not connect on a three-point field goal in its the setback at Ball State, Jan. 5, 2011. EMU also was held without a three in a loss at Seattle (Dec. 30, 2010) and in a win against Toledo (March 11, 2010). Prior to the current streak, the last time the Eagles did not make one was Jan. 26, 2002, in a 52-43 road victory over Central Michigan.
Eastern Michigan is a combined 5-for-39 from three-point field goal range over the last five contests.

HEARTBREAK AT THE BUZZER: Dating back to an overtime loss at Michigan State on Dec. 3, each of the Eagles' last five losses have been by three points or fewer

JAMES MOVING UP ON MAC LIST AS WELL: Senior Tavelyn James, the leading scorer in EMU history, is also moving up the Mid-American Conference list. With a basket at the 10:36 mark of the second half against Wyoming,  Jan. 2, the native of Detroit, Mich, surpassed the 2,000-point mark for her career. James became only the 11th in MAC annals to reach that milestone. For the complete list of her accomplishments, turn to page 2 of these notes.

FOUTY WITH AUTHORITY: Sophomore forward Olivia Fouty continues to impress with her ability the rebound the basketball. Against Wyoming, Jan. 2, Fouty surpassed her career-high with 15 rebounds in the first half en route to finishing the contest with 18 caroms. The 18 rebounds are tied for seventh most in a single game and are the most by an EMU player since Paige Redditt hauled down 18 against Loyola, Nov. 20, 2011.
Fouty has at least six caroms in 12 of her 14 games this season, and she already has four double-figure rebounding performances (18 vs. Wyoming, 12 vs. UMKC, 12 vs. Michigan, 10 at Detroit).

EMU VERSUS THE MAC: This is EMU's 31st season competing in the Mid-American Conference. The Eagles hold a 206-275 record against conference foes and have posted winning seasons in the MAC in 10 of the last 11 campaigns. EMU has had the most success against Northern Illinois, going 26-9, and the least versus Bowling Green, 14-44. Western Michigan has been the Green and White's most frequent opponent with 69 meetings while Buffalo holds the distinction of the fewest conference games against the Eagles with 18.

NCAA RANKINGS: The latest NCAA Statistical Rankings came out on Jan. 5 and the Eagles are 10th in the nation (out of 336 eligible teams) in steals per game at 13.8. They are 16th in turnover margin at +6.29, 28th in rebounding margin (+7.7) and 65th in scoring margin (+9.7) . Individually, Tavelyn James is seventh in the nation in scoring with an average of 22.4 points per game and 67th in three-point field goals per game at 2.3. Desyree Thomas is third in the nation with an average of 4.1 steals per game, while Olivia Fouty is 97th in the nation in rebounds with an average of 8.4 per game.

INTERESTING STATS ABOUT EMU: In its eight victories this season, EMU is averaging 72.9 points while the opposition is posting just 50.8 points. In those games, opponents are shooting 38.4 percent from the field compared to 42.6 percent for the Eagles. In defeats, the Eagles are only scoring 62.0 points, while giving up 68.8. Another factor in the Eagles' success has been the ability to control the glass. EMU is grabbing 41.5 rebounds to just 30.3 for the opponents in the wins, while in setbacks EMU is out-rebounding by only three caroms (41.0 to 38.0).

ROCKETS ON THE HORIZON: The Jan. 11 contest marks the 65th meeting between Toledo and Eastern Michigan, who first met during the 1977-1978 season. The Rockets lead the overall series, 41-23, including winning both regular season games last season. However, the Green and White ousted Toledo from the 2011 Mid-American Conference Tournament with a 61-55 victory in the semifinal round at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio.
Despite being the Eagles' closest conference opponent at just 49 miles, the Rockets have dominated the all-time series with a 22-8 record inside Savage Arena.

“D” IS THE KEY: Wednesday's game features two teams that pride themselves on defense, with Toledo and Eastern Michigan ranking second and third, respectively, in scoring defense in the Mid-American Conference.  The Eagles have held seven teams this year under 60 points, while the Rockets have accomplished the feat seven times. Against Marygrove, Nov. 14, Eastern's defense stymied the Mustangs, forcing 36 turnovers and 31 points. Meanwhile, Toledo held Albany to just 39 points in a 53-39 victory, Nov. 22.
