EMU IN MAC OPENERS: Eastern Michigan opens its 31st Mid-American Conference slate Thursday night, Jan. 5, versus the Cardinals of Ball State University. The game marks just the third time that the two schools have squared off in a conference lid-lifter and the first since the 2008-09 campaign. BSU is 2-1 in those contests. The Green and White are 14-16 all-time in league openers dating back to 1981-82. EMU has won eight of the last nine MAC-opening tilts going back to the 2002-03 season, including a 79-63 win over Northern Illinois University last year in DeKalb, Ill., Jan. 5, 2011.
A BULLSEYE ON BALL STATE: The Jan. 5 contest marks the 63rd meeting between the Cardinals and Eagles, who first played during the 1979-80 season. Eastern Michigan leads the series, 35-27, including winning the last four meetings.
For a complete listing of the series results, turn to page seven of these notes.
EMU VERSUS THE MAC: This is EMU's 31st season competing in the Mid-American Conference. The Eagles hold a 206-274 record against conference foes and have posted winning seasons in the MAC in 10 of the last 11 campaigns. EMU has had the most success against Northern Illinois, going 26-9, and the least versus Bowling Green, 14-44. Western Michigan has been the Green and White's most frequent opponent with 69 meetings while Buffalo holds the distinction of the fewest conference games against the Eagles with 18.
JAMES MOVING UP ON MAC LIST AS WELL: Senior Tavelyn James, the leading scorer in EMU history, is also moving up the Mid-American Conference list. With a basket at the 10:36 mark of the second half against Wyoming, Jan. 2, the native of Detroit, Mich, surpassed the 2,000-point mark for her career. James became only the 11th in MAC annals, to reach that milestone. For the complete list of her accomplishments, turn to page 2 of these notes.
FOUTY WITH AUTHORITY: Sophomore forward Olivia Fouty continues to impress with her ability the rebound the basketball. Against Wyoming, Jan. 2, Fouty surpassed her career-high with 15 rebounds in the first half en route to finishing the contest with 18 caroms. The 18 rebounds are tied for seventh most in a single-game and are the most by an EMU player since Paige Redditt hauled down 18 against Loyola, Nov. 20, 2011.
Fouty has at least six caroms in 11 of her 13 games this season, and she already has four double-figure rebounding performances (18 vs. Wyoming, 12 vs. UMKC, 12 vs. Michigan, 10 at Detroit).
INTERESTING STATS ABOUT EMU: In its eight victories this season, EMU is averaging 72.9 points while the opposition is posting just 50.8 points. In those games, opponents are shooting 38.4 percent from the field compared to 42.6 percent for the Eagles. In defeats, the Eagles are only scoring 64.2 points, while giving up 71.8. Another factor in the Eagles' success has been the ability to control the glass. EMU is grabbing 41.5 rebounds to just 30.3 for the opponents in the wins, while in setbacks EMU is out-rebounding by only three caroms (40.8 to 37.4).
