Eagles Close Out Regular Season This Weekend

Women's Swimming and DIving will compete in its final two meets before heading to the MAC Championships, Feb. 23-25

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving team will compete in its final two meets of the regular season when they take on Miami at Jones Natatorium, Friday, Jan. 27 at 5 p.m. The Eagles will then travel to Toledo to face the Rockets, Saturday, Jan. 28. at 1 p.m.
ALL-TIME SERIES: The RedHawks are currently 5-2 on the year with a 2-1 mark in conference meets after capturing Mid-American Conference wins over Akron and Ball State. Their lone loss in the MAC was a 179-120 setback to Toledo on Nov. 4, 2011. EMU's Friday meet with Miami will be the 34th between the two squads, with the RedHawks holding a 6-27 advantage in the all-time series that dates back to the 1976-77 campaign. The Eagles and RedHawks last met in the 2010-11 season, where Miami posted a 195.5-95.5 win over EMU.
The Rockets, who are 4-2 on the season and remain undefeated in the MAC at 3-0, will face EMU for the 20th time in program history. EMU last faced the Rockets in a 167.5-132.5 loss during the 2009-10 season, but the Green and White still maintain a 14-5 advantage over Toledo in the all-time series. The two teams first dualed in the 1991-92 campaign, where the Eagles topped UT, 118-62.
LAST TIME OUT: The Eagles recently picked up home wins against Wayne State and Akron to improve to 5-3 overall and a 2-1 mark in the Mid-American Conference.
EMU posted a 134-104 victory over Wayne State on Jan. 20. Briana Emig and Jessie Godlewski picked up multiple wins for the Green and White, as Emig swept the 1,000, 500 and 200 Freestyle distances, while Godlewski won the 200 IM and 200 Backstroke events.
The Eagles dominated in both the one and three-meter dives, taking the top-six finishes on the three-meter and sweeping the top-four on the one meter board. Kelly Hendricks took first on the three-meter after recording the evening's top score of 336.45. Christina Nunez-Wood was runner up with 297.30 points, and Danielle Hulvey placed third with 290.17. Hulvey then took the one-meter dive with her 290.55 point performance, while Hendricks placed second with 267.75. Soquel Rey would place third in the event and Lauren Dark closed out the top-four for the Eagles with a 252.45, fourth place finish.
Against Akron, the Green and White combined for a 185-115 win over the Zips. Emig again took multiple wins in the 1,000, 500 and 200 Freestyle events. Lauren Kalinosky was the top-finisher in the 100 Breaststroke, while Godlewski took the 200 Butterfly and Monica Dorszewski won the 200 Breaststroke. In the 100 Butterfly, Meghan Richardson earned first place in 57.62.
Hendricks took first in the three-meter dive, while Hulvey was the top performer in the one-meter dive.
YOUTH MOVEMENT: A handful of underclassmen on the Eagles' squad have posted some of the top-ten times in the Mid-American Conference this season.
Freshman Sara Ghaffari currently owns the sixth-fastest time in the conference for the 100 Freestyle with her 51.61 performance at the EMU Invitational on Dec. 2-3. At that same meet, Ghaffari posted the seventh-best time of 55.86 in the 100 Butterfly, while sophomore Jackie Swartz recorded the eighth-fastest time in that event when she completed the distance in 55.93.
Swartz also earned the fourth-best time in the 200 Butterfly, touching the wall in 2:02.05 at the EMU Invite. Freshman Jessie Godlewski followed with the fifth-fastest performance in that same meet after posting a time of 2:02.64. Both Swartz and Godlewski also own top-ten times in the 200 IM, as Swartz's 2:04.27 time currently ranks third, while Godlewski's 2:06.67 sits in tenth. In the 400 IM, Godlewski is ninth with her time of 4:31.61.
In the 100 Breaststroke, freshman Monica Dorszewski posted the 10th-quickest time of 1:04.99 at the EMU Invitational. She also recorded the fifth-best 200 Breaststroke time in the MAC of 2:20.25.
On the boards, sophomore Danielle Hulvey is second on the three-meter with her score of 332.93 achieved against Akron on Jan. 21. She also owns the top one-meter mark of 317.10, while freshman Soquel Rey has the eigth-highest score of 276.90.
ON THE HORIZON: This weekend's meets will conclude the regular season for the women's swimming and diving team, as they will not return to action until Feb. 23 for the 2012 Mid-American Conference Swimming and Diving Championships in Akron, Ohio. EMU will look to improve upon its fourth place finish in the 2011 Championships.
