INSTATE RIVALS COLLIDE SATURDAY AT THE CONVO: Fresh off a 70-66 victory over the defending WNIT National Champions Rockets from the University of Toledo, the Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team returns home Saturday, Jan. 14, for a Mid-American Conference West Division showdown against instate rival Western Michigan University. Game time is scheduled for 2:06 p.m. inside the Convocation Center.
The Eagles enter the game with a mark of 10-6 (2-1 MAC) while the Broncos are 5-11 (2-1 MAC). Eastern Michigan and Western Michigan are deadlocked with Central Michigan University and Ball State University in a four-way tie atop the MAC West Division.
A SPOTLIGHT ON THE BRONCOS: The Jan. 14 contest marks the 70th meeting between the Western Michigan Broncos and Eastern Michigan Eagles, who first played during the 1976-77 season. EMU leads the all-time series, 39-30, and has won 11 of the last 13 meetings.
FINDING THE GAME ON YOUR RADIO DIAL: With the EMU men's basketball team on the road for a game against Ball State University Saturday, the women's contest will only be broadcast on Eagle All-Access rather than WEMU (89.1 FM). Ryan Wooley and Greg Steiner will have the call beginning at 1:50 p.m. As always, on demand replays of most EMU basketball games are available to subscribers at EMUEagles.com/showcase.
A LOOK BACK AT THE LAST MEETING WITH WESTERN MICHIGAN: EMU closed out the 2010-11 regular season with a decisive 80-56 win over Western Michigan University Wednesday, March 2, 2011, in a Mid-American Conference West Division game.
The Eagles, now 19-11 overall and 10-6 in MAC action, had four players in double figures, led by senior guard Sydney Huntley with 17, junior guard Tavelyn James and junior forward Paige Redditt adding 16 each with senior Cassie Schrock scoring 13.
Western, 9-20 overall and 5-11 in league play, was led by Miame Giden with 19 points.
Eastern blistered the nets for 51.6 percent from the field, hitting 32-of-62 shots while holding Western to 35.5 percent, making 22-of-62 attempts. EMU held a slim 40-36 edge on the boards.
EAST-WEST ALLEGIANCES: When the Eagles and Broncos take to the court Saturday, Jan. 14, it will not only be a battle between in-state rivals but for family bragging rights. WMU redshirt senior guard Maria Iaquaniello is the older sister of EMU junior volleyball standout Rachel Iaquaniello. Maria is the Broncos leading scorer in 2011-12 with 13.1 points per contest after being named the squad's Defensive MVP last year. Meanwhile Rachel collected first-team All-MAC accolades in 2011 after ranking second in the league with 3.99 kills per set. She also sits fourth overall in EMU history with 1,382 career kills.
EMU ENDS TOLEDO's 17-GAME HOME MAC WINNING STREAK: In a battle of Mid-American Conference West Division powers, Eastern Michigan used strong shooting and aggressive defense to disrupt the potent Toledo offense, en route to a 70-66 victory, Jan. 11. The loss snapped Toledo's 17-game conference winning streak inside Savage Arena. UT's last home conference loss was a 75-69 setback to Ball State University, March 7, 2009.
JAMES TAKES IT TO ANOTHER LEVEL AGAINST TOLEDO: Senior guard Tavelyn James turned in a game-high 30 points on 10-of-21 shooting as EMU snapped Toledo's 17-game conference winning streak inside Savage Arena with a 70-66 victory, Jan. 11. James has saved some of her career best performances for the Rockets. In eight career games against the Midnight Blue and Gold, James is averaging 19.4 points, 3.4 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.9 steals in 33.2 minutes per game. She has tallied three games with 30-or-more points, including a 40-point output at the Convocation Center, March 2, 2010.
NCAA RANKINGS: The latest NCAA Statistical Rankings came out on Jan. 9 and the Eagles are 10th in the nation (out of 336 eligible teams) in steals per game at 13.9. They are 17th in turnover margin at +6.13, 25th in rebounding margin (+8.0) and 61st in scoring margin (+9.9) . Individually, Tavelyn James is seventh in the nation in scoring with an average of 21.9 points per game and 62nd in free throw percentage per game at 83.8. Desyree Thomas is fifth in the nation with an average of 3.9 steals per game, while Olivia Fouty is 100th in the nation in rebounds with an average of 8.4 per game.
ON THE HORIZON: Things do not get any easier for EMU next week, as the Eagles host MAC West rival, Central Michigan University Thursday, Jan. 19 at the Convocation Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:06 p.m. The contest marks the 68th meeting between the Chippewas and Eagles, who first met during the 1976-77 season. CMU leads the overall series, 37-30, but EMU has won 17 of the last 22 meetings dating back to the 2000-01 campaign.
AGAINST IN-STATE SCHOOLS: Eastern Michigan has had great success against other collegiate programs in the state of Michigan over the past 10 seasons. Since the beginning of the 2002-03 season, the Eagles are 39-14 (.696) against in-state rivals, including a 17-11 mark under Coach Gilbert.
EMU VERSUS THE MAC: This is EMU's 31st season competing in the Mid-American Conference. The Eagles hold a 208-275 record against conference foes and have posted winning seasons in the MAC in 10 of the last 11 campaigns. EMU has had the most success against Northern Illinois, going 27-9, and the least versus Bowling Green, 14-44. Western Michigan has been the Green and White's most frequent opponent with 69 meetings while Buffalo holds the distinction of the fewest conference games against the Eagles with 18.
HOME COURT ADVANTAGE: Eastern Michigan is 4-1 at the Convocation Center this season. The Eagles have won 29 of the last 38 home games dating back to the 2008-09 campaign. Eastern Michigan has racked up a solid home-court advantage inside the friendly confines of the Convocation Center since the doors opened during the 1998-99 campaign. The Green and White has won 69.5 percent of the contests played in the building, piling up a 123-54 all-time mark.
STRUGGLING FROM DOWNTOWN: The Eagles' three-point field goal shooting ability has been the team's Achilles heel in 2011-12, as the Eagles are shooting just 24.9 percent from the outside. EMU has made two-or-fewer shots from beyond the long line on six occasions this season and is a combined 3-3 in those contests. The distance change to 20-feet, 8-inches for this season may have contributed to EMU's struggles. At this point during the 2009-10 campaign, EMU was averaging 6.9 long-range shots per game compared to 3.1 this season.
