SOUTH BEND, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University men's cross country team fought through cold temperatures, high winds, and soggy course conditions this afternoon at the prestigious Notre Dame Invitational today, Sept. 30, working for a 20th place team finish.
The Eagles battled a very competitive field that included a slew of nationally ranked programs on the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division I Poll, including No. 3 Stanford, No. 10 Florida State, No. 12 Princeton, No. 14 BYU, No. 21 New Mexico, No. 23 Notre Dame and No. 25 Ohio State.
BYU took home the team victory, with their own Miles Batty clinching the individual title thanks to a 23:59 effort for the Cougars.
Senior captain Austin Hendrix's (Sylvania, Ohio-Northview) 25:02 run on the five-mile Notre Dame Golf Course led EMU this evening, earning him 58th place in a field of 205 participants.
Terefe Ejigu (Wellington Cook, New Zealand-Wellington College) was just eight seconds behind Hendrix in 69th place. The junior completed the race in 25:10, while teammate Grzegorz Kalinowski (Torun, Poland-Nicholas Copernicus University) finished in 25:42 for the 121st spot.
Cole Sanseverino (Monroe, Mich.-Monroe) and Daryl Smith (Windsor, Ontario-Vincent Massey S.S.) posted times of 25:48 and 25:59, respectively, to round out the team scoring for the Green and White this evening.
The Eagles will next cross the border and compete in the Guelph Invitational hosted by the University of Guelph in Guelph, Ontario. Race time is scheduled for 10 a.m.
