GUELPH, Onatario (EMUEagles.com)
—The Eastern Michigan University men's cross country team took third place at the New Balance Vic Matthews Open hosted by University of Guelph today, Oct. 15, scoring 76 points with four runners placing within the top-20.

Ian Hancke led the Eagles with his 25:06.6, 14th place effort this afternoon, with teammate Nick Petro crossing the finish line less than a second later in 15th place.

Seniors Cole Sanseverino and Austin Hendrix raced to 17th place (25:11.4) and 18th place (25:12.1) finishes, respectively, and Daryl Smith placed 23rd in 25:23.4.

Head Coach John Goodridge was happy with his team's performance considering the Green and White had to deal with poor course conditions.

" We had a very positive team effort racing on a tough muddy course,” said Goodridge. “It featured several very challenging hills, with strong winds and some rain throughout the race.

The Eagles were also short of a few key components of this year's squad, but other members managed to step up in their absence.

“We had two of our top-five runners kept home with Terefe Ejigu home training and Grzegorz Kalinowski home with illness,” said Goodridge. “We needed some guys to step up and both Hancke and Petro did so in strong fashion, nurtured by our two seniors Hendrix and Sanseverino.

Our overall race strategy and execution was very useful for us as we prepare for the approaching Conference Championship.”

The Eagles will return to action on Oct. 21 when they host the annual EMU Classic at 5:30 p.m.
