Dalga Finishes Third at Fighting Irish Gridiron Classic

NOTRE DAME, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University sophomore Jared Dalga (Grand Rapids, Mich.-Forest Hills Central) remained red-hot on Tuesday, Sept. 27, finishing with a round of 70 in third place with a two-over par 212 (72-70-70) at the Fighting Irish Gridiron Classic. As a team, the Eagles recorded a mark of 887 (296-297-294) in a tie for seventh place on the 7,023 yard, par-70 Warren Golf Course.
The finish was Dalga's first career top-five finish in 11 all-time events. Additionally, his 54-hole tally was the best of his young career, bettering a mark of 217 (68-72-77) set at the Firestone Invitational, Oct. 11-12, 2010.
Behind Dalga, senior Derek East (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada-St. Paul's-University of New Orleans) carded a 77 on the tournament's final day to finish in a tie for 31st place with a 224 (73-74-77). Freshman Alex Jones (Dewitt, Mich.-Dewitt) placed 42nd with a 227 (77-76-74) and Brian Churchill-Smith (Oakville, Ontario, Canada-Oakville Trafalgar) came in 48th with a 228 (74-77-77). Casey Olsen (Okemos, Mich.-Okemos-Oakland University) also notched rounds of 78, 79 and 73 for 57th place.
Playing as an individual, senior Zach MacDougall (Coquitlam, British Columbia-Centennial) rounded out the lineup with a 232 (78-74-80) for a tie for 61st.
St. Mary's and Houston shared the team title at 30-over 870. The individual champion was Texas-Arlington's Paul McConnell, who posted a score of 210 (71-68-71).
Head Coach Bruce Cunningham and the Eagles return to action at the Firestone Intercollegiate, Oct. 10-11, in Akron, Ohio.
