EMU looks for its first win at Ohio Friday

Complete Release (.pdf)

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)– The Eastern Michigan University soccer team opens the 2011 Mid-American Conference schedule with a pair of road contests Friday, Sept. 23, at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio and Sunday, Sept. 25, at the University of Akron in Akron, Ohio. Friday's match is set for 4 p.m. while Sunday's tilt begins at 1 p.m.

JUST LIKE STARTING OVER: The Green and White hope to snap a six-game losing skid and nab its first win of the season against a pair of teams which sit near the bottom of the MAC East Division. The Bobcats finished non-conference play with a 3-5-0 mark and the Zips went 3-3-0.

TIME AFTER TIME: Eastern Michigan and Ohio will meet for the 18th time Friday, with the Eagles holding a narrow 7-6-4 advantage in the series. The two teams battled to scoreless ties in 2010 and 2009, with EMU winning the 2008 matchup, 2-1, Oct. 26, 2008.

In contrast, the Eagles have largely owned the all-time series with the Zips, posting a 7-1-2 record through 10 meetings. Last season, the Eagles cruised to a 4-1 home victory against Akron, Sept. 26.

WORKING FOR THE WEEKEND: The Eagles enter the weekend on a scoring drought which has span 286:57 when freshman Emily Dzik netted her first-career goal in a 2-1 loss to Butler, Sept. 2. To end that streak, EMU will need to get past a pair of stingy defenses which have allowed a combined 16 goals in 14 games.

Ohio is equipped with a solid back-end anchored by redshirt junior Remi Famodu and goalkeeper sophomore Mattie Liston. Liston ranks third in the MAC in several key categories including: goals against average (1.10; third), save percentage (.800; third) and saves (36; 3rd).

The Bobcats' strong defense has been largely negated by their inability to score goals. Kelsey Pichel is the team's leading scorer with two goals, with four others tallying one goal through six games.

For the Zips, the story is much the same. Akron has allowed only seven goals after eight games but has scored an equal amount. Kyarah Foushee and Ashley Hughes each have a pair of goals so far this season, while three others have one.

Goalkeeper Jeny Wolbert has been steady for the Zips, posting a 3-2-0 record with an .846 save percentage. Wolbert's team has recorded a conference-low 46 shots, while allowing opponents 94.

Ohio is next on the list of fewest shots-for with 76– 30 more than Akron. EMU ranks seventh in the MAC with 102 total shots.

START ME UP: In five starts this season, goalkeeper Maggie Manville has leaped to the top of the MAC ranking in saves per game with six. Manville has made 30 saves on 40 shots, good for a .750 save percentage which ties her for sixth place in that category.

Sophomore keeper Rachel Rye has also made five saves this season, giving EMU third place in team saves.

FIGHT THE POWER:  A change of venue did little to shift the fortunes of the team, which dropped its sixth-straight match, 3-0, to Illinois State University Friday, Sept. 16, at Scicluna Field. The first home game of the season was spoiled by a hat trick from ISU freshman Rachel Tejada.

Eastern Michigan fired nine shots at ISU goalkeeper Aryn Newsom, who needed to make several brilliant saves to keep the Eagles off the scoreboard. Freshman Bianca Rossi had three of those shots and was robbed twice in a 15-minute span.

Stephanie Clarke and Angela Vultaggio also came up just short of tallying goals for the home team as well.

Despite allowing three goals, Maggie Manville played a solid game in goal for the Eagles, making 10 saves on the evening.

WITH OR WITHOUT YOU: Senior defender Julie Kaim made her return to the EMU lineup against Illinois State. The Palos Hills, Ill. native played the entire 90 minutes in her first action since Aug. 23 at the University of Detroit.

Kaim figures to be an integral part of Head Coach Scott Hall's plan to guide the Eagles through the MAC schedule and into the postseason.

SWEET DREAMS ARE MADE OF THIS: The Eagles enter the 11-game MAC schedule with aspirations of capturing their second-ever conference championship. EMU last won the title in 1999, when they defeated Miami University on penalty kicks, 5-3. The win gave the Eagles an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament, where they eventually fell to the Minnesota Golden Gophers, 2-0.

In 2008, the Green and White breezed past Northern Illinois and Central Michigan with a pair of 2-0 wins to reach the championship game, where No. 1 seed Toledo squeaked by with a 1-0 victory.

Last season, the Eagles fell on penalty kicks to No. 5 Western Michigan at Scicluna Field in the opening round.

INTO THE GROOVE:  The Eagles finished 6-2-3 in MAC play in 2010 which included an impressive 6-0-1 start to the conference slate. Eastern Michigan's most decisive conference wins included a 4-1 triumph versus Akron, Sept. 26, and a 6-4 offensive explosion against Bowling Green, Oct. 1.

WALK THIS WAY: Last season, EMU outscored MAC opponents, 19-12. Now-graduated Maggie Christensen tallied six goals against conference foes, while Stephanie Clarke put four in the back of the net along with seven assists.

PUMP UP THE JAM: Kent State comes to Scicluna Field Friday, Sept. 30, to open the Eagles' home MAC schedule. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
