Eastern Opens MAC Play with WMU and NIU

The Eagles will travel to Kalamazoo, Mich. and DeKalb, Ill. to start conference matches this weekend

The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team continues its 2011 campaign Friday, Sept. 23, when it heads to the west side of the state to take on the Western Michigan Broncos at 7 p.m. The Eagles' match with the Broncos is the first in their Mid-American Conference schedule. Eastern continues the week with its second MAC match against Northern Illinois, Saturday, Sept. 24 when the Eagles and Huskies square-off for a 7 p.m. match.

EAGLES HOT IN FIRST 14: The Eastern Michigan University women's volleyball team has been dominant to start the season going 12-2. EMU dropped its opening match to the host of the 2011 Shamrock Invitational at the University of Notre Dame, and fell to Brigham Young University in the Utah Invitational for its only losses of the 2011 campaign.

ALL-TIME VERSUS THIS WEEK'S FIELD: The Eagles open up the weekend with their first Mid-American Conference match, Friday, Sept. 23, at Read Fieldhouse in Kalamazoo, Mich. The Eagles take on Western Michigan at 7 p.m. Eastern is 20-51 all-time against the Broncos as they head into 2011 play.

Following the match in Kalamazoo, EMU heads to DeKalb, Ill. to take on the Huskies of Northern Illinois at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24. The Eagles are 18-25 in their history against the Huskies as they look to take their 19th match.

THIS WEEK'S OPPONENTS: The Eagles take on two teams that have had success so far this season. Combined their opponents are 21-6 on the season. The Eagles are 12-2 this year, winning 38-of-50 sets played this season.

Western Michigan is the first of Eastern's opponents this week. The Broncos are 10-3 and their three losses are to North Carolina, Notre Dame and Wisconsin. Their attack percentage as a team is .241 (696-261-1802). The Broncos were 22-10 in 2010. The Eagles and Bears face-off at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23.

Next up for EMU are the Huskies from Northern Illinois. The Huskies are 11-3 on the season, losing to No. 18 Iowa State (3-1) and No. 14 Northern Iowa (3-0). NIU also dropped its match with the Aggies of Texas A & M. The Huskies haven't struggled hitting this season, as they have a .284 attack percentage (706-220-1713) on the year. The Huskies were 27-8 in 2010. The two teams square-off at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24.

MAC ATTACK: The Green and White has enjoyed great success over the 2011 season in non-conference matches, going 12-2. The Eagles head into Mid-American Conference play by traveling to Kalamazoo, Mich. to take on their first MAC opponent in Western Michigan.

ROBACK NAMED RMU HOLIDAY INN VOLLEYBALL CLASSIC MVP: Sophomore Paige Roback was named the 2011 Robert Morris Holiday Inn Volleyball Classic Most Valuable Player Saturday, Sept. 17, after the Eagles were named champions of the tournament held in Moon Township, Pa.

The sophomore outside hitter paced the Eagles offense in the championship match with 26 kills. She also was stellar on the serve with five service aces. Throughout the tournament she averaged 2.89 kills per set, while coming up with 1.89 digs per set defensively.

Roback is second in kills for Eastern with 117 on the season. She is averaging 2.34 kills per set and she is one-of-four Eagles with double-digit aces on the year (11). Roback has maintained a .241 hitting percentage (117-43-307) on the year, second best on the EMU squad.

EAGLES HONORED IN MOON TOWNSHIP: The Eastern Michigan University women's volleyball team had two players named to the 2011 Robert Morris Holiday Inn Volleyball Classic All-Tournament team Saturday, Sept. 17. Kristen Baker and Haley Stein were honored for their play as the Eagles went 3-0 en route to being named tournament champions.

Baker appeared in eight-of-nine sets for Eastern throughout the invitational. She was able to rack up 20 kills in her eight sets, good for 2.5 kills per set. Baker was also able to knock down eight total blocks and maintained a .265 attack percentage throughout the tournament.

Stein played in all nine sets, leading the Eagles in digs with 45, while averaging 5.00 digs per set. For the 2011 campaign, Stein is leading EMU with 263 digs, good for 5.26 per set. Stein averaged 5.73 digs per set in 2010 when she set an Eastern Michigan single season record 757 digs.

NEAR THE TOP OF THE MAC IN...: Rachel Iaquaniello is second in the Mid-American Conference in kills per set with 4.10, trailing only Lauren Wicinski of Northern Illinois University who has 5.17 kills per set.

Ashley Mason is fifth in the conference in assists per set with 10.06 assists per set this season.

Haley Stein ranks second in the MAC with 5.26 digs per set this season. She is trailing only Lena Oliver of Western Michigan.

As a team, the Eagles are first in the conference in digs with 930 and second with 18.60 digs per set this season. The Eagles trail just Western Michigan (18.72).

STEIN DIGGING HER WAY INTO THE EMU RECORD BOOKS: Libero Haley Stein was selected to the 2010 First Team All Mid-American Conference volleyball team last season.

Stein set a single season record for digs in 2010 by picking up 757. Stein is also on her way to setting a career record in digs. At third on the career digs list with 1,776 career digs, the Carleton, Mich. native is third all-time for EMU behind Ashley Cudney (2,198) and Jennifer Nighswander (1,897).  She was also named All-MAC first team in last season's campaign after leading the MAC in digs. Stein ranked fifth nationally in digs per set with 5.73. She was also second nationally with her 757 digs. Stein also set a school record for digs in a match when she had 55, Oct. 8, against Western Michigan.

The Carleton, Mich. native is also a two-time Academic All-MAC selection. Being named to those teams in 2009 and 2010.

MASON MAKING HER MARK: In her fourth year setting for the Eagles, Ashley Mason has moved to third all-time in assists in her career with 4,167 as an Eagle. She trails just Kate Sulewski (5,474) and Sherry Anderson (4,513).  Mason was fourth in the MAC in assists, averaging 10.72 per game which was good for 47th in NCAA Division I during the 2010 campaign.

A first-time All-MAC selection, Mason was a second team All-MAC selection following the 2010 season.

Also capturing All-MAC second team honors were: Akron's Tina Dimitrijevs, BSU's Whitney Heeres and Brittany McGinnis, Buffalo's Abby Niekamp, CMU's Lauren Krupsky, Kent State's Liva Brivule and Meredith Paskert, NIU's Maddie Hughes, Ohio's Michelle Jantsch, Toledo's Kassie Kadera and WMU's Allyson Doyle.
