Eagles Fall to Western Michigan in MAC Opener

Eastern was able to take one set from the Broncos as they fall to 0-1 in MAC play this year

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's volleyball team dropped their opening Mid-American Conference match Friday, Sept. 23, at Read Fieldhouse to host Western Michigan 3-1. Eastern took the first set 25-21, but fell in the next three 18-25, 15-25, and 16-25.
After falling to the Broncos, Eastern is now 12-3 on the season and 0-1 in Mid-American Conference play, while WMU improves to 11-3 on the year and 1-0 in MAC competition.
Paige Roback (Maumee, Ohio-Notre Dame Academy) paced the Eagles' offense with a .280 attack percentage (10-3-25) while Rachel Iaquaniello (Plymouth, Mich.-Dearborn Divine Child) led the Green and White with 11 kills. Megan Crawshaw (Mattawan, Mich.-Mattawan) set a career-high with six kills and Ashley Mason (Eastlake, Ohio-Lake Catholic) had a team-high 34 assists in the loss. Eastern had five players in double figures in digs as Haley Stein (Carleton, Mich.-Monroe St. Mary's Catholic Central) led the way with 18.
EMU jumped out early in the opening set as Erin Short (Orrville, Ohio-Orrville) led things off with a kill. After Western tied up the set, the Eagles took a 3-1 lead when Roback had a solo block and the Broncos had an attack error. Eastern dropped 7-of-9 points and looked at an 8-5 deficit when Cassie Sowers (Williamsport, Ohio-Wesfall) picked up a kill to make it a two-point lead for Western. EMU evened the score at nine points each but fell behind 11-9 on a pair of errors. Eastern took four straight points to get on top 13-11 but the Broncos didn't let up as they were able to tie it up at 16-16. After trading points back and forth, Head Coach Kim Berrington called for a timeout with her Eagles trailing 19-18. Out of the timeout Eastern took two points to get up 20-19 and cruised to a 25-21 win in the first frame. Short and Roback led the Eagles' offense in the set with four kills each, while Mason had 11 assists.
The Eagles opened up the second set with a kill and a block from Kristen Baker (Mentor, Ohio-Mentor) to jump up 2-0, but the Broncos came back with three straight points. Short was able to stop the surge with a kill, which evened up the score 3-3. After Eastern took a 7-4 lead, the Broncos return-fired with three straight to even up the score. Western followed up by hitting a hot-streak and taking a 14-9 lead over the Green and White, prompting an EMU timeout. Out of the timeout, Eastern struck for two straight points, including a big kill from Roback. The Eagles struggled to gain momentum as they traded points throughout the remainder of the set and fell 25-18. Roback added four more kills in the second set to lead the Eagles offense and Mason was able to pick up 10 more assists as they went into the locker rooms with the match nodded up at one set each.
Eastern and the Broncos traded points out of the gate in the third set until Western was able to pick up steam and take a 10-6 lead. After swapping a few points, WMU was able to take a pair of points and get up on EMU 15-9 which led Berrington to call a timeout in the third frame. After the first timeout, Eastern picked up a few points, but the Broncos caught fire and took a 21-12 lead, prompting a second timeout for EMU. The Eagles were unable hit their stride and fell behind 2-1 after Western took the set 25-15. Rachel Iaquaniello led the offense with four kills in the frame while Sowers picked up four digs in the frame.
After exchanging points to open the set, the Eagles trailed 9-7. Eastern went on a roll winning five straight to take a 12-9 lead before Western stopped the streak and bounced back with a streak of their own and evened things up at 13-13. Following a six-point score streak for Western, the Eagles called a timeout to regroup trailing 16-13. Out of the timeout Eastern picked up a pair, but the Broncos fired back with eight straight points and took a 24-15 advantage. EMU was able to pick up another point on a block, but Western prevailed with a 25-16 advantage in the final set.
The Eagles continue their MAC schedule Saturday, Sept. 24, when they travel to DeKalb, Ill. and square off with the Northern Illinois Huskies in the Convocation Center on the NIU campus. First serve is set for 7 p.m. at Victor E. Court.
