Roback Named MVP as Eagles Sweep RMU Classic

Eastern topped the Colonials of Robert Morris to win the Holiday Inn Volleyball Classic

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's volleyball team continued their hot streak winning a fourth straight match on Saturday, Sept. 17. The Eagles topped the Colonials of Robert Morris to win the 2011 Robert Morris Holiday Inn Volleyball Classic in straight sets (25-10, 25-21, 25-19). Eastern had three players garner tournament honors as Paige Roback (Maumee, Ohio-Notre Dame Academy) was named the invite's Most Valuable Player and Kristen Baker (Mentor, Ohio-Mentor) and Haley Stein (Carleton, Mich.-Monroe St. Mary's Catholic Central) were named to the All-Tournament team.
EMU improved their record to 12-2 on the season after downing the Colonials, and RMU fell to 3-10 on the year.
Baker paced the Eagles offense with 11 kills, while maintaining a .333 attack percentage (11-3-24). Rachel Iaquaniello (Plymouth, Mich.-Dearborn Divine Child) led the match with 13 kills. Erin Short (Orrville, Ohio-Orrville) chipped-in with eight kills and six block assists, while Roback had nine kills in the Eagles victory. Ashley Mason (Eastlake, Ohio-Lake Catholic) had a match-high 30 assists for Eastern.
Baker opened the match with seven kills in the first frame leading the Eagles to an early one-set lead. Iaquaniello pitched in with five kills in the opening frame to help Eastern to the 25-10 win.
Roback and Iaquaniello each had five kills in the second set as EMU went up 2-0 with a 25-21 victory in the frame. The Eagles were able to rack up 10 total blocks in the set.
Roback and Baker led the offense in the final set for Eastern as each had four kills in the 25-19 win. Short and Iaquaniello each netted three kills in the set while Mason had 14 assists in the final set to sweep the Colonial.
Eastern head into Mid-American Conference play on Friday, Sept. 23 when they travel to Kalamazoo, Mich. for a match with the Western Michigan Broncos. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Read Fieldhouse.
