EAST LANSING, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- Eastern Michigan University junior Sarah Johnson (Wixom, Mich. -Walled Lake Central) put together an impressive start to the 2011-12 campaign Saturday, Sept. 17, firing an opening-day total of 152 (75-77) at the Mary Fossum Invitational on the Forest Akers West Golf Course. Johnson tallied four birdies on the day to sit in a tie for 16th place after 36 holes.
The Eagles as a team stand in eighth place at 621 (304-317), one shot behind Oakland. Host Michigan State paces the 12-team field at 584 (286-298), while Ohio State stands in second place at 604 (299-305).
Senior Shannon Warner (Livonia, Mich.-Livonia Churchill-Michigan State) is tied for 25th place with a 155 (76-79). Sophomore Alyssa Kwon (Richmond Hills, Ontario, Canada-Richmond Hills) carded rounds of 77 and 81 to sit tied for 37th place. Meredith Fairbairn (Orangeville, Ontario, Canada-Westside Secondary School) and Corey Crossan (London, Ontario-Mother Teresa Catholic Secondary School) rounded out the EMU lineup with 160 (76-84) and a 161 (81-80), respectively.
Caroline Powers of Michigan State leads the 65-player field by a stroke at 142 (71-71).
The second and final day of the he Mary Fossum Invitational will take place Sunday, Sept. 18.
