EMU plays final non-conference game of the season
Complete Release (.pdf)
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)– The Eastern Michigan University soccer team plays its first home match in more than a month Friday, Sept. 16, at Scicluna Field. Start time is set for 4 p.m. The Eagles look to rebound from an 0-5-1 road trip against the Illinois State Redbirds, who come in to Ypsilanti with a 4-3 record.
STAYING PUT: Friday's contest marks the final non-conference match of the season and the first of seven remaining home games on the 2011 schedule. The Eagles' conference home slate includes dates with Kent State, Sept. 30, Buffalo, Oct. 2, Miami, Oct. 9, Ball State, Oct. 21, Toledo, Oct. 23, and Central Michigan, Oct. 27.
THE SERIES: Eastern Michigan and Illinois State will meet for the fourth time Friday afternoon, with the Green and White holding a 2-1-0 series advantage. These two teams last did battle Aug. 27, 2010, when the Eagles came out on top, 1-0, in Normal, Ill.
GET YOUR KICKS: Friday's contest will feature a pair of teams on opposite ends of the offensive spectrum. The Redbirds enter the match having scored 20 goals in seven games for a 2.85 goals per game average. The Eagles have managed just four tallies in their first six games for a 0.67 goals per game clip.
For Head Coach Scott Hall, the keys to a swift rebound include restoration of confidence and emotional balance. “We are a very talented team but we have carried some off-the-field emotions onto the field, which is understandable,” said Hall. “We need to stay composed and confident.”
Hall also pointed out that, although his team is struggling to find the back of the net, they still have the ability to create quality scoring chances. Among those players creating those chances are Cara Cutaia and Stephanie Clarke, who have a combined five points this season.
“Cara and Stephanie are fantastic players and will come out of this [slump],” said Hall.
STOP THAT TRAIN: The Eastern Michigan defense will have the dubious task of halting ISU freshman forward Rachel Tejada, who has registered nine goals and four assists for 22 points in seven games this season. Tejada has led a Redbirds offense which has put-up four or more goals three times.
Senior defender Julie Kaim will return just in time to help guide a young defensive core which coach Scott Hall still views as “still developing as a dynamic defensive group.” In Kaim's absence, the Eagles held a potent Oakland offense without a goal in a 1-0 setback, Sept. 4. The goal was scored on a penalty kick.
A FULL COMPLEMENT: For the first time this season, Head Coach Scott Hall will have a weapon at his disposal which was noticeably missing during the first six games: an entire roster of players.
Senior Julie Kaim and her sister, Allison, return to the lineup after missing the previous four games. Julie, an All-MAC second team member last season, returns to anchor a young defensive unit.
GET ME OUTTA HERE: A month-long, six-game road swing finally concluded with the first-ever meeting with the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers Sunday, Sept. 11. The Eagles surrendered a pair of second half goals in a 2-0 setback to finish return home on a five-game losing streak.
The season began with a dramatic 2-2 tie at Pitt, Aug. 19, but lost a series of tough games thereafter including one in overtime to IUPUI, Aug. 28, and another on a penalty kick at Oakland, Sept. 4.
SINCE YOU'VE BEEN GONE: Several of Eastern Michigan's freshmen have already played major roles after just six games at the collegiate level. Forward Angela Vultaggio is currently tied for the team points lead with four thanks to a two goals and an assist.
Defender Emily Dzik also has a goal and an assist. She has also started in every game this season and is the only freshman to have done so.
Newcomers Bianca Rossi and Molli Krick have also played in all six matches this season with Rossi starting in four and Kirck in one.
EXPLAIN THAT: Among the most inexplicable things that have kept EMU out of the win column in 2011 is the amount of good scoring opportunities created by EMU forwards which have not resulted in goals.
Senior forward Chelsea Detrick leads the team with 18 shots, eight on goal, but has been stymied by opposing goalkeepers on all attempts. Likewise, sophomore Stephanie Clarke has registered nine shots on net and has yet to register a goal. Clarke has one assist thus far.
THIS IS OUR HOUSE: Last season, the Eagles finished with a home record of 3-1-3 including victories against Akron (4-1), Sept. 26, Bowling Green (6-4), Oct. 1 and Northern Illinois (3-1), Oct. 15.
TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS: The Eagles finished 6-2-3 in MAC play in 2010 which included an impressive 6-0-1 start to the conference slate. Eastern Michigan's most decisive conference wins included a 4-1 triumph versus Akron, Sept. 26, and a 6-4 offensive explosion against Bowling Green, Oct. 1.
ON THE RECORD: Chelsea Detrick currently sits eighth all-time on the EMU scoring list with 45 points, four shy of tying former Eagle stars Brandy Jones (1997-2001) and Courtney Sindelar (1999-2002). Jessica Hupe (2000-04) is the all-time leading point-getter with 117.
The native of Grosse Pointe, Mich. is also just a pair of goals away from tying Ashley Rodrigues (21) for fourth all-time in goals with 19. Hupe tallied 49 goals to top the career goals list as well.
