SUGAR GROVE, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's golf team kicked off its 2011-12 season Saturday, Sept. 10, at the Northern Intercollegiate at Rich Harvest Farms. The Eagles, who are tied for 11th place with the University of Akron, were midway through the event's second round when play was suspended due to darkness.
Sophomore Brian Churchill-Smith (Oakville, Ontario, Canada-Oakville Trafalgar) used an even-par 71 in the opening round to pace the Eagles on the 6954-yard, par-71 course. Churchill-Smith finished the round tied for ninth after posting a two-over par on the front nine and stellar two-under on the back with a pair of birdies at the par-five 11th and the par-four 12th.
Junior Casey Olsen (Okemos, Mich.-Okemos) also turned-in a solid two-over 73 Saturday, with four birdies including one on the 483-yard par-four second. Olsen will start Sunday tied for 29th place.
Sophomore Jared Dalga (Grand Rapids, Mich.-Forest Hills Central) shot a five-over 76 to tie for 46th place, while Alex Jones (Dewitt, Mich.-Dewitt) finished the round tied for 74th with a seven-over 79. Senior Zach MacDougall (Coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada-Centennial) took a nine-over 80 for 79th place.
The University of Central Florida currently leads the event after a two-under par round of 282. Jose Joia of UCF led the field of 97 golfers with a five-under 66 in the first round.
Competitors will resume play at 7 a.m. Sunday morning, finishing their second round and then play a final 18 to complete the 2011 Northern Intercollegiate. Fans can track the tournament's progress at golfstat.com.
