Miami and Toledo picked to win their respective divisions
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com)– The Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team was picked to finish fourth in the West Division according to the 2011 Mid-American Conference preseason coaches poll, the conference office announced Monday, Aug. 15.
The Eagles received 41 total votes in the divisional poll, 24 behind predicted West Division champion University of Toledo. In the East Division, Miami University was voted preseason favorite with 68 votes. The Green and White also secured one vote as MAC Tournament champion along with Miami, Western Michigan University and Ball State University. Toledo led the way with six nods in championship voting, while two-time defending MAC champion Central Michigan University claimed two.
The Green and White return 11 letterwinners including eight starters and a pair of All-MAC selections from last year's squad which posted a 9-7-5 record with a 6-2-3 league ledger, good for third in the MAC regular season. All-MAC Second Team member Julie Kaim will serve as the Eagles' leader on defense and Stephanie Clarke will be among the team's top offensive threats following All-MAC Second Team and Freshman of the Year nominations in 2010.
The Eagles will be seeking their first West Division crown since a two-division system was implemented in 2010 and their first conference title since 2003. The East and West Division champions will earn the top two seeds in the MAC Tournament while the rest of the eight-team field will be seeded according to point total regardless of division. The MAC Tournament starts Oct. 30 at campus sites and will then move to the home of the highest seed for the semifinals and final, Nov. 4-6.
The regular season opens this Friday, Aug. 19, with the Eagles traveling to Pittsburgh, Pa. to take on the University of Pittsburgh. The conference season begins Sept. 23 and will wrap up Oct. 27.
