Sophomore Courney Calka earns her first career Capital One All-Academic Award

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University sophomore Courtney Calka (Livonia, Mich.-Stevenson) has been named to the 2010-11 Capital One Track & Field/Cross Country Academic All-District IV second team, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced, today, June 2.

Not only is the honor a first for Calka, but it also represents the first Capital One Academic All-District IV award in EMU women's cross country program history.

Calka, a 4.0 exercise science major, was an All-Mid-American Conference and Academic All-MAC selection in 2010 as well as a U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Division I Cross Country All-Academic selection. The Livonia, Mich. native paced the Eagles in each of her seven meets this season, including three first-place finishes throughout the 2010 campaign. At the 2010 MAC Cross Country Championships, she led the Green and White with a fifth place finish time of 21:03.9. Thanks to her 21:22.79, 21st-place performance at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional, Calka was named to the All-Region team for the second time in her young career. The sophomore was named MAC Runner of the Week on Oct. 13 after winning the Michigan Intercollegiate with a personal best 17:16.0 finish. At the George Dales Invitational on Sept. 17, Calka set the Pine View Golf Course 6K record with her first-place effort of 20:48.20.

The 2010-11 Capital One Academic All-District Women's Track and Field/Cross Country Teams, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America, recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performance on the floor and in the classroom.

The Academic All-District includes student-athletes divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. The University Division team includes NCAA Division I participants, while the College Division team combines NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, NAIA, Canadian and two-year schools.
