RECORD-SETTING SEASON IN THE BOOKS FOR EASTERN MICHIGAN: It was a magical 2010-11 campaign for the Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team, as the Eagles finished with a 24-13 overall record and an 10-6 mark in Mid-American Conference play. Fourth-year head coach AnnMarie Gilbert guided a veteran squad to numerous single-season records, as well as the program's first two postseason victories in the Women's National Invitational Tournament (WNIT).
Additionally, the Eagles became the first No. 5 seed to ever play in the championship game. Miami, a No. 4 seed in 1995, Western Michigan (No. 4 in 2003) and Bowling Green (No. 4 in 2004) were previously the highest seeds to ever advance to the title game. Western Michigan, a No. 4 seed in 2003, is the highest seed to ever win the title.
FIRST POSTSEASON VICTORIES: With the 67-59 victory over Michigan in the first round of the WNIT, March 17, and the 63-54 win at UNC Wilmington, March 21, the Eagles picked up the program's first post-season victories.
NEW STANDARD FOR WINS IN A SEASON: With its 63-54 victory over UNC Wilmington, March 21, EMU eclipsed the program's highest win total for a single season, surpassing the 23 victories during the 2004-05 campaign.
JAMES SETS THE EMU RECORD FOR POINTS IN A SEASON: With her proficiency to score in bunches, Tavelyn James set the EMU single-season record for points in a season. With an average of 17.4 points per game, the Detroit native finished the season with 642 points, breaking her own mark of 641 points in 31 games during the 2009-10 season.
James' total came up just short of the all-time mark among juniors in Mid-American Conference history. Toledo's Kim Knuth holds down the league's junior standard of 681 points during the 1997-98 campaign.
A LOOK AT SINGLE-SEASON MILESTONES THAT WERE SET THIS SEASON: With the season complete, the Eagles set 16 single-season records during the 2010-11 campaign.
LEADING THE PACK: The Eagles were one the most dominant teams statistically in the Mid-American Conference this season, leading the league in five categories and ranking in the top five in seven others. The Green and White were tops in the MAC in: field goal percentage defense (36.6%), three-point field goal percentage defense (27.6%), steals (11.73), turnover margin (+4.24) and offensive rebounds (16.49).
UNCHARTED TERRITORY: Prior to this season, the Eagles have never played more than 31 games in a single season. The March 24 game at Syracuse marked the 37th time that EMU has taken to the hardwood in 2010-11.
SCHROCK SETS RECORD FOR GAMES PLAYED: Senior Cassie Schrock played in 126 games during her four-year career, surpassing the trio of Nikki Knapp (2002-06), Melis Ulker (2002-06) and Sarah VanMetre (2003-07) for the all-time record for the most games played in an EMU uniform. Knapp, Ulker and VanMetre all played in 120 contests for then-Head Coach Suzy Merchant.
JAMES SETS THE JUNIOR SCORING MARK AT EMU: With 642 points on the season, junior Tavelyn James obliterated the EMU record for most points in a single season by a junior. The Eastern Michigan record for most points by a junior was 557 by Laurie Byrd in 1980-81.
James already holds the EMU freshman and sophomore scoring records with 426 points during the 2008-09 campaign and 641 during the 2009-10 season.
NCAA RANKINGS: The final NCAA Statistical Rankings came out on April 2 and the Eagles were 16th in the nation (out of 333 eligible teams) in steals per game at 11.7. They were 23rd in turnover margin at +4.24 and 20th in three-point field goal defense made per game at 27.6 percent. Individually, Sydney Huntley was 68th in the nation with an average of 2.4 steals rebounds per game. Tavelyn James was 48th in the nation in scoring with an average of 17.5points per game, and Cassie Schrock was 10th in the nation in assists with an average of 5.9 per game and 52nd with an assist-to-turnover ratio of 1.71.FIFTH 20-WIN SEASON: With its 82-74 victory over Miami, March 5, the Eagles picked up their fifth 20-win season in the past eight campaigns. Prior to the 2003-04 year, Eastern Michigan had never won more than 18 games in a single season.
SCHROCK BECOMES EMU SINGLE-SEASON ASSISTS LEADER: With her three assists versus Toledo, March 11, Cassie Schrock became the EMU single-season assist leader with 189 dimes, surpassing Erika Ford's standard of 186 set in 2004-05.
WHAT A RALLY ALONG THE COAST!: Despite trailing by 13 points, 47-34, with just 14:26 remaining in the contest, the Eagles used a 29-7 run over the next 13:45 to post a 63-54 win, March 21, over the University of North Carolina-Wilmington in the second round of the WNIT at Trask Coliseum in Wilmington, N.C.
During Eastern's impressive second-half rally, the team shot 13-of-26 from the field (50 percent), while holding UNCW to just 29.2 percent (7-of-24). Conversely, in the first half, EMU wasn't nearly as hot from the floor in the first half, only connecting on 31.4 percent of its shots, while North Carolina-Wilmington was shooting at a 43.3 percent clip.
THE COUNTDOWN TO 1,000: Senior Sydney Huntley scored 986 points in her career and is 17th all time. There are currently 16 players in the 1,000-point club for EMU women's basketball.
