Men's Golf Moves into Third Place at MAC Championships

MAINEVILLE, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University men's golf team will need to rally in a big way Sunday in order to recapture the Mid-American Conference title at the par 72, 7,180 yard TPC River's Bend. Kent State University owns a 29-stroke lead over the second-place Cardinals of Ball State University after Saturday's third round of the 2011 MAC Championship.
Head Coach Bruce Cunningham's squad entered the day in fourth place, and left the course following Saturday's round one position better in third. The Eagles carded a third round 299 for a two-day cumulative score of 896 (297-300-299). Tournament leader Kent State continued its scorching play with a four-over 292 for an 859 (292-275-292) and the 29-stroke advantage heading into Sunday's final 18 holes.
No. 34 Kent State and Eastern will be joined by the Ball State in the final five threesomes of Sunday's round. The Cardinals Ball State managed a 888 (297-295-296). Akron is fourth at 900 followed by Northern Illinois (913), Bowling Green (916), Toledo (919), Miami (922) and Ohio (938) complete the field.
Individually, KSU's Mackenzie Hughess still holds the lead with a six-under 210 followed by teammate John Hahn in second place at 214.
Three Eagles are ranked in the top 15, including senior Nick Carbary (Kalamazoo, Mich.-Mattawan) who is in fifth place at 217 (71-75-71). Freshman Brian Churchill-Smith (Oakville, Ontario, Canada-Oakville Trafalgar) is in eighth place with a 221 (74-76-71). Sophomore Casey Olsen (Okemos, Mich.-Okemos-Oakland University) is tied for 15th with a 227 (77-74-76. Rounding out the EMU lineup, junior Derek East (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada-St. Paul's-University of New Orleans) and freshman Jared Dalga (Grand Rapids, Mich.-Forest Hills Central) are tied for 29th and 33rd, respectively.
Due to impending weather in the area, Sunday's final round tee times have been moved up. The fourth and final round of the 2011 MAC Men's Golf Championship will get underway at 8 a.m. Sunday, May 1. Following competition, MAC Golfer, Freshman, Coach and Sportsmen of the Year, First and Second Team All-MAC and the All-Tournament team will be announced.
