Men's Golf Finishes Third at MAC Championships

Three Eagles finish inside the tournament's top 11 spots

MAINEVILLE, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) -- Despite firing a final round 302, the Eastern Michigan University men's golf team finished in third place at the 2011 Mid-American Conference Championship with a three-day cumulative score of 1,198 (297-300-299-302). Kent State University captured its third consecutive league title, finishing at one-under par 1,151 (292-275-292-292) on the par 72, 7,180 yard TPC River's Bend course.

EMU senior Nick Carbary (Kalamazoo, Mich.-Mattawan) finished in a tie for fifth place with a six-over 294 (71-75-71-77) while freshman Brian Churchill-Smith (Oakville, Ontario, Canada-Oakville Trafalgar) placed 10th with a 299 (74-76-71-78). For his efforts, Carbary earned all-tournament team accolades. The finish was Carbary's third career top-five showing, while it also marked the third top-10 finish of Churchill-Smith's freshman campaign.

Kent State's Mackenzie Hughes claimed individual medalist honors with a four-under 284 (70-67-73-74) earning him a two shot victory over teammate John Hahn as the Golden Flashes had four players finish in the top 10.

Sunday's round of 292 was a culmination of a convincing week which saw No. 34 Kent State post the fifth widest margin of victory in the 65-year history of the MAC Championship. The Golden Flashes were followed by Ball State (1,180), Eastern Michigan (1,198) and Akron (1,200). While Miami (1,213), Northern Illinois (1,216), Bowling Green (1,221), Toledo (1,229) and Ohio (1,247) rounded out the team standings.

For the tournament, three of the five Eagles ranked in the top 11, including sophomore Casey Olsen (Okemos, Mich.-Okemos-Oakland University) who finished 11th with a 296 (74-73-74-75). Junior Derek East (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada-St. Paul's-University of New Orleans) and freshman Jared Dalga (Grand Rapids, Mich.-Forest Hills Central) rounded out the lineup win 27th and 33rd place, respectively.

Head Coach Bruce Cunningham and the rest of the Eagles will now await the announcement of the teams that will participate in the six NCAA regional championships. That announcement will be made May 9.
