MAINEVILLE, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) -- With 36 holes in the books at the 2011 Mid-American Conference Championship, the Eastern Michigan University men's golf team sits in fourth place with a 597 (297-300). Kent State University leads the way after posting a nine-under par 567 (292-275) on the par 72, 7,180 yard TPC River's Bend course.
The Golden Flashes hold a 25-stroke lead heading into day two, that total includes holding down three of the tournament's top five slots. Ball State is in second place with a score of 592, followed by Akron (595), EMU (597), Northern Illinois (607), Miami (613), Toledo (613), Bowling Green (625) and Ohio (625).
All five Eagles are ranked in the top 27, included senior Nick Carbary (Kalamazoo, Mich.-Mattawan) who is tied for sixth place with a two-over par 146 (71-75). Freshman Brian Churchill-Smith (Oakville, Ontario, Canada-Oakville Trafalgar) notched a 150 (74-76) for a 12th place tie. Sophomore Casey Olsen (Okemos, Mich.-Okemos-Oakland University) is tied for 14th with a 151 (77-74) and junior Derek East (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada-St. Paul's-University of New Orleans) is tied for 16th with a 151 (75-77). Rounding out the EMU lineup, freshman Jared Dalga (Grand Rapids, Mich.-Forest Hills Central) fired rounds of 80 and 75 for a 27th place tie.
KSU's Mackenzie Hughes leads the field with a seven-under 137 (70-67). He had an up-and-down first round with four birdies and four bogeys through fourteen holes, but closed with consecutive birdies on 17 and 18 to put him in a second-place tie after 18 holes. Opening with pars on the first three holes of his second round, he then birdied the short, par-4 4th hole and eagled the par-5 No. 6 to move him to five-under where he stayed until closing with two more birdies in the final three holes to open up a three-shot lead on the field.
Second-place Ball State was paced by the play of senior Eric Steger who rode three straight birdies at the end of his first round to lead the field with a 69, then carded another solid round of 71 to sit in a tie for second as an individual going into tomorrow's third round.
The third round of the 2011 MAC Men's Golf Championship will get underway at 8 a.m. Saturday, April 30, with the final round scheduled for Sunday, May 1, at 8 a.m. For live scoring, visit http://www.golfstat.com
