Box Score.
ATHENS, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University softball team made a triumphant comeback in the sixth inning against Ohio University this afternoon, April 23, but heavy rain and lightning in the Athens, Ohio area washed away the Eagles' four-run sixth inning to revert the game's score to the end of the fifth, giving the Bobcats the 3-1 game one victory.
With the heartbreaking loss, the Green and White now sit at 22-12 on the season and 8-6 in Mid-American Conference play.
The Bobcats improve to 17-19 overall and 6-6 in the MAC.
EMU's Lauren Wells (Lowell, Ind.-Lowell) is dealt the loss and drops to 7-3 on the season. The lefty went 4.1 innings, giving up two earned runs while striking out two.
Jessica Richards (Canton, Ohio-Jackson) led the Eagles with a 3-for-3 effort at the plate while swiping her 15th stolen base of the season. McKenna Russ (North Canton, Ohio-Hoover) tallied two hits in the contest, including her second triple of the season, while scoring the lone run for the Green and White.
The Eagles' offense made noise early in the opening frame when Richards led off the game with a double to left field. Stacie Skodinski (South Bend, Ind.-Washington) successfully moved her to third on a sacrifice bunt, however the Green and White suffered two more outs, stranding Richards 60 feet away from the go-ahead run.
EMU shut down the Bobcats in the bottom of the first and continued right where they left off in the top of the second, as Russ led the inning with a triple to the right field fence. Allison Scherer (Stow, Ohio-Stow-Munroe) successfully plated the first run of the ballgame thanks to her one-out single to opposite field, allowing Russ to score and put the Eagles up, 1-0.
In the bottom of the second, the Bobcats threatened with runners at first and second and no outs after Emily Wethington and Lauren Gellerman hit back-to-back singles. OU's Sara Clark laid down a bunt to third base, but Richards gunned down the lead runner attempting to advance, recording the first out of the inning. A fielder's choice and a ground out to Wells allowed the Eagles to escape the inning unscathed.
Ohio would knot the score at one apiece in the bottom of the third when Paige Kemezis hit a ball that ricocheted off of Skodinski's glove into the outfield, giving Jillian Van Wagnen time to score from second base.
The Bobcats added another two in the fifth to take their first lead of the contest. Consecutive singles by Alexis Joseph and Kemezis put runners at first and second and later advanced on a fielder's choice. The Eagles' pitching staff gave Wethington the free pass to load the bases for Gellerman, who hit a single to right field and give the Bobcats a 3-1 lead.
Before the impending game-ending rain and lightning arrived, the Green and White responded loudly in the sixth with four hits, including two home runs which would have given the Eagles the lead in late innings.
Nellie Coquillard (Niles, Mich.-Niles) led the frame with a single to left, bringing Sarah Gerber (North Canton, Ohio-Hoover) to the plate. The junior drilled a two-run shot over the center field fence that would have tied the score at three runs apiece.
Russ strung together what would have been the Eagles' third-consecutive hit of the inning and her potential third hit of the game on a double to right center field. With one out, Scherer dug in at the dish and hammered a two-run bomb well beyond the left field fence that would have pushed the Eagles ahead, 5-3.
The Eagles' sixth-inning efforts were erased however, as heavy rain and lightning forced the umpires to call the game and revert the final score to the last complete inning. Unfortunately for the Eagles, it would fall back to the conclusion of the fifth where the Bobcats held on to a 3-1 lead that would become the final for today's contest.
EMU will look to bounce back tomorrow in game two of their series with Ohio. First pitch is slated for a 1 p.m. start.
