YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — After a disappointing 1-3 outing at Varsity Field last weekend, the Eastern Michigan University softball team will look to get back on track this weekend when they head to both Akron and Ohio University to continue their journey through Mid-American Conference play. The Friday, April 22 doubleheader with the Zips is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start, and single games in Athens, Ohio will be played on Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday and 1 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT: The Eastern Michigan University softball team hosted both Ball State and Miami last weekend at Varsity Field for a quartet of Mid-American Conference contests.
The Eagles went 1-3 on the weekend, taking a 5-3 win over the Cardinals in their doubleheader split on Friday afternoon. In the game one victory, the Green and White battled back from a 2-0 deficit in the third inning and scored five unanswered to an eventual 5-3 final, with Jessica Richards (Canton, Ohio-Jackson) leading the Eagles offense with a 3-for-4 performance. Jenna Ignowski (Niles, Mich.-Niles) earned the win
in the circle, scattering eight hits in 7.0 innings of work, while striking out 11 in her complete game effort.
In game two, the Eagles' bats were quieted to just two hits in the 2-1 setback. Jaclyn Caro (Chino, Calif.-St. Lucy's Priory) was charged with the loss in 1.1 innings in relief, but managed to strike out one to help the Eagles escape a jam in the sixth. Lauren Wells (Lowell, Ind.-Lowell) went 5.1 innings in the circle and gave up one earned run on six hits.
EMU then dropped two to Miami to fall to 7-5 in MAC play. In game one, the Eagles' line up was held to just two hits in the loss, with Sarah Gerber (North Canton, Ohio-Hoover) and Allison Scherer (Stow, Ohio-Stow-Munroe) representing the Green and White's only offensive production that afternoon.
Ignowski was charged with loss and dropped to 12-4 on the year. The sophomore went 1.1 innings before being relieved by Wells in the second inning. Wells took over and notched 5.2 innings in the circle, striking out five while holding the RedHawks to just two hits and one earned run.
The Eagles committed five errors in game two, contributing to a 5-3 loss to the RedHawks. Offensively, EMU registered six hits in the contest and were led by sophomore Nellie Coquillard's (Niles, Mich.-Niles) 3-for-4 effort at the plate. Wells was issued the loss and drops to 7-2 on the season.
SCOUTING THE ZIPS: EMU and the University of Akron will meet for the 40th time in program history on Friday, a matchup that dates back to the 1988 season with Akron leading the all-time series, 25-14.
The Zips are currently 18-19 on the season and 2-8 in Mid-American Conference games, collecting wins over Miami and Ball State.
The Akron pitching staff has combined for a 3.13 earned run average through 37 contests. Alex Riedman has seen the most innings in the circle at 99.1 and has struck out 53 batters in her 24 appearances while maintaining a 3.03 ERA. Heather Bauer owns a 2.65 ERA in 74.0 innings pitched and has kept opponents to a .228 batting average.
Offensively, Alex Feltes leads all hitters with a .389 clip in 113 at bats while cranking out 44 hits and knocking in 15 RBI for the Zips. Olivia Hegedus was named this week's MAC East Player of the Week by the conference office after going 6-for14 over six games last week with four home runs and nine RBI.
SCOUNTING THE BOBCATS: The Eagles and Bobcats first met in the 1981 season, with EMU leading the all-time series, 48-27. The two teams last met on April 16, 2010, where the Bobcats stole a 6-1 victory at Varsity Field.
Ohio University sits at 15-18 overall this season and 4-5 in Mid-American Conference Play. The Bobcats have taken wins over Miami, Akron, and Northern Illinois and currently are ranked third in the MAC East Division.
Emily Wethington has been the go-to pitcher for the Bobcats, throwing in 134.2 innings with a 3.01 ERA. She has accumulated 111 strikeouts in 27 appearances while holding opponents to a .262 batting average.
Wethington also leads her squad offensively with a team-best .360 clip, including 27 hits with seven doubles, four home runs, and 17 RBI. Melissa Bonner and Paige Kemezis are the Bobcat's other two hitters with averages above the .300 mark. Bonner is hitting .329 on the season with a team-best .553 slugging percentage, while Kemezis is hitting .307 with a team-high 18 RBI in 88 at bats.
A LOOK AHEAD: After this weekend's games at Akron and Ohio, the Eastern Michigan University softball team will head to Cleveland State on April 26 to make-up an April 6 doubleheader that was postponed due to unfavorable weather conditions in the Cleveland area.
After playing two with the Vikings, the Eagles will travel to Mt. Pleasant, Mich. for a MAC West Division matchup with the Chippewas of Central Michigan University on April 30 and May 1. The Saturday contest is set for a 2 p.m. start, and Sunday's game will begin at 1 p.m.
CLUTCH COQUILLARD: Sophomore Nellie Coquillard's statistics with runners on base have been nothing short of impressive this season, successfully advancing runners in 64 percent of her at bats (30-of-47 opporunities). The Niles, Mich. native also boasts impressive numbers when there are runners in scoring position with a .438 (14-of-32) average, and also hits .556 with a runner on third and less than two outs. Coquillard has also shown success with two-out at bats, as the sophomore has hit for a .419 clip in that situation. With the bases loaded, Coquillard has hit a perfect 2-for-2 including her first career grand slam against Detroit on March 29. In addition to her clutch hitting with runners on, the sophomore has also been a difficult hitter to take down with strikes and has only fallen victim to the strikeout six times in 84 at bats.
RICHARDS ON THE RUN: Jessica Richards currently leads the Eagles with 13 stolen bases in 13 attempts this season. The junior is on pace to swipe 22 on the year to bring her career number to 42. The 22 season stolen bases would put her in sixth all-time in the EMU individual season record books, while 42 would be fifth-best for career stolen bases.
IN THE RANKS: The Eastern Michigan University softball team is currently sitting in third for overall batting average in the Mid-American Conference (.311) and third in pitching (2.55 ERA). The Green and White are also second in slugging percentage (.465) and first in triples (six). The Eagles' pitching staff has the second-best opposing batting average (.230), the third highest amount of strike outs (208), and lead the conference in batters struck out looking (72). EMU's hurlers have allowed the least amount of hits with 181, and the fewest earned runs allowed with 76 on the season.
In conference-only games, the Eagles rank fourth in batting average (.331) and second in pitching (2.27 ERA). EMU's 108 hits in MAC games ranks the most in the conference, as does the Eagles' 22 doubles, five triples, 167 total bases, and the 326 at bats.
ROAD WARRIORS: After completing this weekends trip to Akron and Ohio, the Eagles will have traveled a total of 5,630 miles so far this season. EMU has already visited Fort Myers, Fla. for a round-trip total of 2,563 miles, in addition to the 676-mile trek to Bloomington, Ind. and back. The Green and White's cruise to Austin Peay State racked up appoximately 1,050 miles round trip. A quick there-and-back to Detroit added another 77 miles, and the hike to DeKalb, Ill. with a pitstop in Kalamazoo on the return will piled on another 626 miles to their tally.
