Women's Hoops Advances to Semi-Finals with 69-65 Win Over KSU

CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — Despite giving up a double-digit lead with less than 10 minutes remaining in the game, the Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team persevered and withstood an offensive onslaught, capturing a 69-65 win over the No. 4 Kent State University Golden Flashes in the quarterfinals of the FirstEnergy 2011 Mid-American Conference Women's Basketball Tournament at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio, Wednesday, March 9.
The Eagles advance to the semi-finals for the first time since the 2006-07 campaign, in which they defeated Ohio University in the quarterfinals before falling to Bowling Green State University, 71-57, to end the season.
Sydney Huntley, who was named the game's Most Valuable Player, poured-in 20 points on 9-of-12 shooting and added two assists and a pair of rebounds. Tavelyn James also netted 21 points along with four steals, and Cassie Schrock turned-in a stellar all-around performance with 16 points, 11 assists, five rebounds, two steals and one blocked shot.
Kent State had three players score in double figures led by Jamilah Humes' 19 points. Ellie Shields chipped-in with 17 points, and Taisja Jones added 15.
The Eagles shot at a 50 percent clip (27-of-54) for the game, while Kent State were 24-of-56 from the field (42.9 percent). Each team shot well from the free-throw line, as EMU netted 11-of-13 and KSU drained 15-of-17.
With the win, the Eagles advance to 21-11 on the season, while the Golden Flashes end their season with a 20-9 mark.
Following the break, James drilled a triple just 25 seconds into the second half to give Eastern Michigan the 34-27 advantage. The tandem of James and Huntley combined to kick-start a 14-6 run by the Green and White to balloon the cushion to 12, 45-33, with 13:57 remaining.
Eastern built the edge thanks enlarge part to its up-tempo style of play, but Kent State would turn the tables with a 12-3 spurt over the next 3:29 to cut the deficit to three, 52-49. EMU turned the ball over four times during the run, with KSU converting on 10 straight points in the lane to slice away at the EMU edge.
KSU would go on to claim a 56-55 advantage with 4:25 to play on a three-pointer by Stephanie Gibson. It was their first lead since the 12:24 mark of the opening half. Huntley answered for the Eagles with a runner in the paint to put the Eagles right back on top at 57-56.
The see-saw battle continued with each side exchanging one-point leads for more than four minutes of action.
Kent State held the early three-point edge, 11-8, on a three-pointer by Chenel Harris with 15:55 showing on the clock. However, an 8-2 run by the Eagles over the next 2:06 gave the Green and White their first lead of the contest, 16-13, on a James fast break layup at the 13:36 mark.
The scoring would slow dramatically for both sides, as the Eagles held the Golden Flashes without a field goal for more than five minutes until Humes ended the drought with a layup with 6:57 showing to cut the EMU edge to one, 23-22. Eastern would experience a four minute streak without a score before Desyree Thomas banked home a jumper to push the margin back to four points.
Eastern headed to the break still clinging to that four-point cushion, 31-27, at halftime.
The Eagles are set to take on the No. 1-seed University of Toledo Rockets in the semi-final matchup, Friday, March 10, at 2:30 p.m. The game can be heard on WEMU 89.1 FM and is available on TV on SportsTime Ohio.
