Kurkmilis records career-high on floor exercise

U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. (EMUEagles.com)- The Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team dropped its second meet of the week versus the Air Force Academy Saturday night, March 5, in Cadet Gym. The meet marks the closest contest of the season for the Eagles and the third time AF and EMU have met up in the last two weeks, losing by just two tenths of a point, 190.950-190.750.
With the loss the Eagles drop to 4-9 (2-3 MAC), while the Falcons jump to 4-9 overall.
Sophomore Kristina Kurkmilis (Eagleville, Pa.- Methacton) had a solid performance earning the top spot on the vault recording a 9.750. Kurkmilis also recorded a career-high 9.575 on the floor exercise good for fourth place.
Freshman Ashley Quinton (Calgary, Canada- Bishop Menally) tied for second on the vault with AF's Samantha Jones tallying a 9.725. Quinton tied for ninth on the uneven parallel bars with senior Jessica Perdoch (Reading, Pa.-Exeter Township) recording a 9.450.
Nikole Viltz (Hawthorn Woods, Ill.- Carmel) continues to dominate her senior season, finishing tied for first earning a season-high 9.750 on the balance beam and tied for fifth recording a 9.550 on the floor exercise.
Freshman Shawna Ciaramella (Hamilton, Ont.- St. Mary CSS) had an outstanding performance, despite the Eagles' loss, earning second and fourth place honors on the floor and balance beam, posting a 9.600 and 9.700, respectfully.
Junior Kristen Yourick (Albuquerque, N.M.- La Cueva) was the only eagle to compete in the all-around where she compiled a 37.125. Yourick finished tied for sixth place on the bars and vault recording a 9.525 and 9.600, respectfully. She also recorded a 9.400 on the floor exercise and 8.600 on the balance beam.
The Green and White are back at it Saturday, March 12 hosting the annual Eagle Invitational, taking on the Golden Flashes of Kent State University. The meet marks the last home game and the end of the regular season for the Eagles. The contest will take place at Bowen Field House and will begin at 7 p.m.
