THE SERIES: Eastern Michigan will meet Buffalo in its Mid-American Conference opener held at Oestrike Stadium this Fri.-Sun., March 25-27. The Eagles hold a 7-2 series lead all-time against the Bulls and took two-out-of-three last season in a series that was moved to St. Bonaventure.

WEEK IN REVIEW: Last weekend, Eastern Michigan held the Inaugural Oestrike Classic in honor of the legendary Ron Oestrike who took EMU to back-to-back College World Series appearances in 1975 and 1976. The Eagles welcomed in Alma College, Oakland University and the University of Michigan in a round-robin tournament. Four of the six games resulted in one run and five were separated by three runs or less.
Division III Alma took Michigan to 12 innings only to fall 4-3 in the tournament opener. The next, the Scots then took the Eagles to 10 innings, but fell 7-6. The Eagles defeated Oakland, 4-3, in their opener and with their win over the Scots, setup a tournament championship as the Wolverines went into the tournament's final game with 2-0 record as well. U-M defeated EMU, 5-2, in the final game to claim the first-ever Oestrike Classic title. EMU's Ken Battiston was named co-MVP with Michigan's Derek Dennis.
On Tuesday, what was supposed to be a two-day series with West Virginia turned into a single day doubleheader due to impending weather conditions. The Mountaineers took game one handily by a 20-6 score. The Eagles scored the game's first six runs, but WVU responded in a big way with 20 unanswered tallies. EMU got the early lead in game two and was able to sustain it all the way through. With two runs in the second, two in the third, and four in the fourth, the Eagles went on to win, 9-7, to split the series.

ON THE HORIZON: Looking ahead, the Eagles will host non-conference opponents Cleveland State Tuesday, March 29, and Michigan Wednesday, March 30, before jumping back into MAC play with at three-game set at Bowling Green April 1-3.

SCOUTING THE BULLS:
The University at Buffalo enters Mid-American Conference play with a 7-11 overall record. The Bulls, picked to finish sixth in the MAC East Division, have won their last five games by outscoring opponents 57-19 during that span. The Bulls are hitting .328 as a team with 25 homeruns so far this season.
Heavy-hitter, Tom Murphy, already has six homers and 26 RBI while posting a .400 (28-for-70) batting average and 18 runs scored. Additionally, he has nine doubles, giving him 15 extra base hits and slugging percentage of .786. Alex Baldock leads the Bulls with a .429 (30-for-70) average at the plate with eight doubles, three homeruns, 17 RBI and 22 runs scored.
The UB pitching staff struggled to get it going early on, but has picked it up as of late, lowering its ERA to 8.52 on the season. Opponents are hitting a hefty .357 against them. Kevin Crumb leads the team with a 2-2 record to go along with a 7.65 ERA in four starts over 20 innings pitched. Cory Folk is 1-0 in five appearances (two starts) and has one of the team's two complete games this year. He has a 7.59 ERA over 21.1 innings pitched.

PITCHING PROBABLES: The Eagles are set throw Robert Wendzicki (0-2) on Friday, Corey Chaffins (3-1) on Saturday and Steve Weber (2-2) in the series finale. Wendzicki, still seeking his first victory of the season, is coming off an outing in which he went seven scoreless innings against Oakland on March 18. Chaffins is looking to rebound from his first loss of the season against Michigan (March 20) while Weber tries to make up for a shortened outing against West Virginia his last time out.
Buffalo will make available this weekend right-hander Kevin Crumb, lefty Josh Edwards righty Cameron Copping and southpaw Cory Folk. It has not yet been indicated which pitcher will throw on which day.

BEST START IN 23 YEARS: Eastern Michigan is off to its best start in 23 years after going 12-8 through its first 20 games this season. The last time the Eagles started better was in 1988 when the then-Hurons went 14-5-1 on the way to a 35-22-1 overall record and a MAC runner-up finish. The Eagles are 11-4 in their last 15 contests.

REVERSED FORTUNES: The Eagles had been held scoreless in the first inning of each game until game 14 of the season against Kansas when they pushed three runs across to take an early lead en route to an 8-1 victory over KU. Since then, EMU has scored six more runs in the opening frame, but is still being outscored 20-9. Conversely, the Eagles have a season-high 31 runs in the second inning, outscoring opponents 31-8 in that stanza.

HE'S ON FIRE: Brent Ohrman had his 12-game hitting streak snapped with an 0-for-3 effort against Michigan March 20, but the junior is still hitting .468 (29-for-62) over his last 15 games. Ohrman has nine multi-hit games during that span including going 4-for-5 in the rubber match against Kansas, March 13. He has five stolen bases during the streak and has made just one error in 43 chances in the field.
