YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team used a six-run eighth inning to make it five straight wins in Mid-American Conference home openers as it defeated the University at Buffalo, 11-2, at Oestrike Stadium, Friday, March 25.
Senior left-hander Robert Wendzicki (Brook Park, Ohio-Midpark) picked up his first win of the season after going seven innings for the second consecutive start and the offense out-hit the Bulls 18-8 en route to the victory. Nine Eagles recorded hits and seven posted multi-hit games as EMU tied a season-high for hits in a single game.
With the win, EMU improved its record to 13-8 overall, 1-0 in MAC play while Buffalo fell to 7-12 (0-1 MAC).
Ken Battiston (West Milton, Ohio-Milton Union) and Kyle Klein (Grand Rapids, Mich.-West Catholic) each recorded three-hit games. Battiston drove in a run and scored twice while Klein drove in two and scored once. Daniel Russell (Grandville, Ohio-Grandville) tallied a pair of base hits and drove in a game-high three runs while extending his team lead RBI total to 20 on the season.
The Eagles cracked the scoreboard in the third with two runs on a trio of hits. Battiston, Brent Ohrman (Adrian, Mich.-Adrian) and Russell paced the top of the order once again as each tallied multiple hits and led off the third with a single apiece. Russell's base hit drove in Battiston to put the Eagles up, 1-0. One more run would cross the plate when Lee Longo (Mayfield, Ohio-Mayfield) grounded into a tailor-made 6-3 double play.
EMU then tacked on an insurance run in the fourth with Battiston's third triple of the season to score Kyle Peterson (Chandler, Ariz.-Hamilton-Chandler-Gilbert C.C.) and make it 3-0, Eagles. The Bulls responded in the next half inning on Daniel Scahill's RBI double to right center.
In the seventh inning, Rubino doubled home Wally Gerbus (Fairfield, Ohio-Stephen T. Baden) who pinch ran for Longo after singling to lead off the frame, to push the EMU lead to 5-2.
Wendzicki (1-2) left with the lead for the second straight start as he allowed just two runs on seven hits and struck out eight while walking just two.
He would remain in line for the win as the offense exploded for six runs in the bottom of the eighth. Peterson led off with a single to left and then got into scoring position by stealing second base. Two batters later, Russell ripped a two-run double to left center to make the score 7-2, and then scored on Gerbus's RBI single through the left side.
The inning culminated with another two-run base hit, this time by Klein, which scored Tucker Rubino (Scottsdale, Ariz.-Horizon-Glendale C.C.) and Zack Leonard (Canton, Ohio-McKinley) to make it 11-2.
Senior Tim Combs (Dayton, Ohio-Wayne) picked up his first save of the season, coming in with a three-run lead in the eighth and retiring the side in order before needing just four batters to get the final three outs in the ninth. Combs allowed only one hit while striking out two.
Buffalo starter Kevin Crumb went six innings and allowed four runs (3 earned) on 10 hits to fall to 2-3 on the season.
The Eagles and Bulls will meet in game two of the series tomorrow, March 26. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m. at Oestrike Stadium.
