The Eagles will go for the series sweep on Sunday after defeating the Bulls, 5-1, today.

Box Score

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)
– Six solid innings from senior right-hander Corey Chaffins (New London, Ohio-New London) and enough run support led him and the Eastern Michigan University baseball team to a win over the University at Buffalo Bulls, Saturday afternoon, March 26, at Oestrike Stadium.

Chaffins (4-1) equaled his win total from all of last season after going six effective innings and allowing just a run on three hits while striking out six and walking two. Sophomore Kristian Calibuso (Brandon, Fla.-Armwood-FSC-Jacksonville) picked up his first save of the season while Buffalo left-hander Josh Edwards fell to 1-3 on the year.

Tucker Rubino (Scottsdale, Ariz.-Horizon-Glendale C.C.) turned in a 2-for-4 day at the plate including an RBI double in the second inning while sophomore Daniel Russell (Grandville, Mich.-Grandville) went 1-for-2 with two RBI including executing a successful suicide squeeze attempt in the seventh inning.

Amidst the frigid temperatures, EMU shortstop Rubino let his guard down defensively with a fielding miscue in each of the first two innings, but they did not lead to any Buffalo runs. He redeemed himself in the second inning by putting the Eagles on top with a run-scoring double to put the Eagles on top, 1-0.

EMU added to its lead with a two-run fifth inning. With runners on first and second Kyle Peterson (Chandler, Ariz.-Hamilton-Chandler-Gilbert C.C.) stole third and scored on an error after the UB catcher over-threw the third baseman on the steal attempt. In the process, Ken Battiston (West Milton, Ohio-Milton Union) moved up to third on the error and Russell drove him in with a single to right to give EMU a 3-0 lead.

Buffalo crawled back into the game with a rally in the sixth. The Bulls put runners on second and third with one out brought to the plate Eric Bryce, who earned Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week honors after hitting five homeruns last weekend.

Chaffins, with his pitch count running high, got two quick strikes on Bryce and then got the UB designated hitter to ground right back to him and he went to home plate for the second out in the inning.

Chaffins would leave the game after five and two-thirds innings and Eagle reliever Jordan Glover (Toronto, Ont.-Ontario Schools) would come in. Glover surrendered an RBI single to Mike Burke before getting the final out of the frame.

In the seventh, a pair of fielding miscues by the Bulls allowed the Eagles to add to their lead. After a walk to the ninth hitter Peterson, the UB shortstop then booted a tailor made double play on a ground ball by Battiston to put runners at first and third.

After a fielder's choice by Brent Ohrman (Adrian, Mich.-Adrian), which scored a run to make the score 4-1, Russell stepped to the plate and executed a perfect suicide squeeze attempt to increase the Eagle advantage to 5-1.

Calibuso picked up the save with three scoreless innings in relief, allowing just a hit while striking out four and walking one.

The Eagles will go for the series sweep in game three tomorrow, March 27. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
