YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Nathan Borchardt
hit two home runs as the Eastern Michigan University baseball team fell to the University of Washington in dramatic fashion, 6-4, at Oestrike Stadium in a non-conference matchup Tuesday, April 28.

Borchardt (Stanley, N.C./East Lincoln/King) homered twice for the first time in his EMU career, recording his fifth straight multi-hit game and tying a career-high with four RBI.

Beyond Borchardt, the Eastern bullpen had a solid performance, allowing two runs across seven innings with scoreless appearances from Emmett Gillies (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Hartley/Akron), Greg Kennedy (Ravenna, Ohio/Jonathan Alder/Lake Erie College), and Jack Angus (Darien, Ill./Montini Catholic/Stetson).

How it Happened
Washington wasted little time getting on the board, scoring in the top of the first and adding two more in the third to build a 3-0 lead. Starter Tommy Rose (Plymouth, Mich./Plymouth) lasted two innings, allowing three runs before the bullpen took over. The Eagles' offense struggled early, held hitless through the first four frames by Washington pitching.

Momentum shifted in the bottom of the sixth when Tristan Crane (Berkley, Mich./Brother Rice/Texas A&M Corpus Christi) and Devan Zirwas (Imperial, Pa./West Allegheny/VCU) reached base to set up Borchardt, who crushed a three-run home run to right, knotting the game at 3-3. The contest remained tied until the bottom of the eighth, when Borchardt again delivered, launching a solo shot to give Eastern Michigan a 4-3 advantage.

The Eagles turned to the bullpen to protect the lead, but trouble struck in the top of the ninth. After a leadoff hit, reliever Cole Egan (Pittsburgh, Pa./West Allegheny/George Mason) was unable to record an out, and Washington's Sam DeCarlo hammered a three-run homer off Landon Mueller (Fremont, Neb./Fremont/Omaha), swinging the game in the Huskies' favor.

Despite the late-inning heartbreak, Borchardt's performance provided a bright spot, as he was responsible for all four Eagles runs on two home runs.

Game Notes
» Eastern's record dropped to 13-29 (7-17 MAC), and Washington's improved to 20-24 (9-12 B1G).
» The defeat also marked the first time this season the Eagles lost a game after leading in the eighth inning as they are 8-1 in the scenario.
» Nathan Borchardt went yard for the third time this season with a three-run shot to right field to tie the game in the sixth inning, extending his hitting streak to seven games. He homered once more in the eighth inning for his first two-homer outing as an Eagle. Borchardt finished the day 2-for-3 at the plate for his 10th multi-hit game of the season and fifth consecutive game doing so. He also matched a career high with four RBI for the second straight game.
» Nathan Borchardt is the fourth Eagle to record a two-homer game this season. He joins John Hale (Ashland City, Tenn./Sycamore/Motlow State C.C.), Nick Weaver (Streamwood, Ill./Streamwood/Elgin C.C.), and Ty Stecko (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin/Mount St. Mary's).
» Nathan Borchardt needs three more RBI to reach 100 in his collegiate tenure as he totals 97.
» Tristan Crane singled to extend his hitting streak to nine games, tying Demir Heidelberg (Homewood, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) for the longest on the team this season.
» Kriss Sydlowski (Ann Arbor, Mich./Saline/USC Sumpter) recorded his first extra-base hit of the season with a double off the right-field wall in the fifth inning.
» Emmett Gillies recorded his eighth appearance without an earned run, striking out one of the six batters he faced without relinquishing a hit or walk.
» Greg Kennedy and Jack Angus each tossed scoreless relief outings. Kennedy's marked his fifth of the season and second consecutively while Angus' went down as his fourth.

Historical Notes
» Eastern and Washington met for the second time and for the first time at Oestrike Stadium. Eastern is 0-2 all-time against the Huskies.
» Eastern hosted a west-coast based program for the first time in program history.
