YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – John Carmichael
nearly went the distance as he tossed 8.2 innings in the Eastern Michigan University baseball team's 6-1 Mid-American Conference win over Bowling Green State University Friday, May 1, at Oestrike Stadium.

Carmichael's (Destrehan, La./Destrehan/McLennan C.C.) 8.2 innings are the longest from an Eagle since Nick Chittum tossed a complete game shutout against Western Michigan in the second game of a doubleheader, March 24, 2024. His 8.2 innings pitched are the second-longest by a MAC pitcher this season.

The junior righty earned his second win of the season (2-6) while Ty Stecko (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin/Mount St. Mary's) led the Eagles' offense with two RBI as Nick Weaver (Streamwood, Ill./Streamwood/Elgin C.C.) recorded a multi-hit day, going 2-for-4 from the plate with a pair of runs scored.

How it Happened
After two scoreless innings, Weaver crossed the plate for the game's first run in the third when John Hale (Ashland City, Tenn./Sycamore/Motlow State C.C.) reached on an error.
Eastern scored a bulk of its runs in the fifth inning, plating four runs off four hits. Hale singled home Nathan Borchardt (Stanley, N.C./East Lincoln/King), and Bruce Jellison (Hartland, Mich./Hartland/Wabash Valley) followed with an RBI single to center, scoring Keegan Knupp (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy Orange). Stecko then delivered the knockout blow, driving a two-run single through the left side to put the Eagles firmly ahead, 5-0.

Kriss Sydlowski (Ann Arbor, Mich./Saline/USC Sumter) added an RBI single in the eighth as EMU continued to apply pressure.

On the mound, Carmichael was in command from the start, tossing 8.2 innings and striking out eight while allowing only three hits and one run on. Jack Angus (Darien, Ill./Montini Catholic /Stetson) came on to secure the final out, stranding a runner as Bowling Green managed its only tally in the ninth. Eastern played error-free defense, turning in a complete team effort to secure the series-opening win.

Game Notes
» Eastern's record improved to 14-29 (8-17 MAC), and Bowling Green's dropped to 16-28 (9-16 MAC).
» Eastern scored four or more runs in one inning for the 13th time this season with four runs in the fifth inning to go ahead 5-0.
» EMU pitching allowed just one run, tying its season-low as it also allowed just one in a 9-1 win at SIUE, Feb. 28.
» Interim Head Coach Trevor Beerman is now 1-0 against his former collegiate coach Kyle Hallock. Beerman pitched at Malone University under Hallock from 2015-17.
» John Carmichael tossed a career-long 8.2 innings, allowing just one run off three hits while striking out a career-best eight and walking three. The 8.2 innings pitched is the longest by an Eagle this season and the longest since Nick Chittum tossed a complete game shutout against Western Michigan in the second game of a doubleheader, March 24, 2024. His 8.2 innings pitched are the second-longest by a MAC pitcher this season.
» While his seven-game hitting streak was snapped, Borchardt reached on a hit-by-pitch to mark his 12th straight game reaching base.
» Ty Stecko recorded his team-best 12th multi-RBI game of the season, driving in two runs off a single through the left side in the fifth inning. Stecko has totaled 94 RBI in his career as he is six away from reaching the century mark.
» Nick Weaver recorded his seventh multi-hit game of the season with a 2-for-4 day at the plate, scoring a pair of runs.
