Eagles Headed to the Coast for Second Round of WNIT

EAGLES HEADED TO THE COAST FOR SECOND ROUND OF THE WNIT: With the program's first postseason victory under its belt, the Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team hits the road for the second round of the Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) Monday, March 21, against the University of North Carolina Wilmington. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Trask Coliseum in Wilmington, N.C..
Coming off a 67-59 victory over the University of Michigan in the opening game of the WNIT, March 17, the Eagles enter the UNCW game with a mark of 23-12 (10-6 Mid-American Conference). Meanwhile, UNC Wilmington sports a 24-8 (14-4 Colonial Athletic Association) mark after knocking out Richmond University with a 63-54 victory, March 17.
The winner of Monday's game will advance to the third round to face the winner of the game between St. Bonaventure and Syracuse, which will also be played on Monday. Round three games are scheduled for March 23-25. All WNIT games will be played on campus sites.
THE ALL-TIME SERIES: Eastern Michigan and UNC Wilmington have never met on the hardwood prior to Monday's scheduled contest. In fact, the two schools have a very limited athletic history with each other. In men's basketball, the schools have met once with the Seahawks notching a 68-64 win at the Indiana Classic in Bloomington, Ind., Dec. 11, 1982. The EMU volleyball team came back with a 3-0 sweep in a match during the Georgia State Tournament, Sept. 12, 2008. In women's soccer, the Green and White cruised to a 2-0 victory on the pitch at the UNCW Soccer Stadium, Sept. 2, 2001.

WIN AND ADVANCE: The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team was not ready to end its season and the Eagles came up with an outstanding effort on both ends of the court to post a thrilling 67-59 win over the University of Michigan Thursday evening, March 17, in the Convocation Center.
The Eagles won the battle of Washtenaw County by holding the visitors to just 38.7 percent from the field, hitting just 24-of-62 attempts, forcing 19 turnovers, making 25-of-63 field goals for 39.7 percent while also making 8-of-21 three-point attempts for 38.1 percent.
The Eagles had three players in double figures, led by junior guard Tavelyn James with 21 while senior guard Sydney Huntley added 17, and junior Paige Redditt chipped in 10. Senior guard Cassie Schrock scored just six points but had a career-best 13 assists.
Michigan had two players in double figures, led by Rachel Sheffer with 20 and Courtney Boylan with 10.

UNCHARTED TERRITORY: Prior to this season, the Eagles have never played more than 31 games in a single season. JAMES SETS THE JUNIOR SCORING MARK AT EMU: With 617 points on the season, junior Tavelyn James has obliterated the EMU record for most points in a single season by a junior. The Eastern Michigan record for most points by a junior was 557 by Laurie Byrd in 1980-81.
James already holds the EMU freshman and sophomore scoring records with 426 points during the 2008-09 campaign and 641 during the 2009-10 season.
THE COUNTDOWN TO 1,000: Senior Sydney Huntley has scored 962 points in her career and is 18th all time. There are currently 16 players in the 1,000-point club for EMU women's basketball.
EMU VERSUS THE COLONIAL ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION: Eastern is 0-1 all-time versus the Richmond, Va. based Colonial Athletic Association, having only played against one of the 12 member institutions. EMU is 0-1 against James Madison, dropping an 80-76 decision at the Caribbean Challenge in Cancun, Mexico, Nov. 27, 2008.

EMU IN THE WNIT: EMU participated in the Preseason WNIT in 2000-01 and made its first appearance in the 2005 Postseason WNIT versus the University of Kentucky. After trailing by as many as five points in the first half, the Wildcats captured a hard-fought 79-68 decision at Memorial Hall in Lexington, Ky., March 19, 2005.
EMU was then paired with Indiana State University in the 2006 Postseason WNIT, with the Sycamores recording a 79-59 victory in Terre Haute, Ind., March 16, 2006. Academic All-American Sarah VanMetre poured in 20 points on 7-of-17 shooting in a losing effort for EMU.
After a three-year absence from the postseason the Eagles returned to the WNIT in 2010 with a trip to Purdue University. The Eagles saw a first-half lead evaporate as the Boilermarkers used clutch free throw shooting to seal the 56-50 victory at Mackey Arena in West Lafayette, Ind., March 17, 2010.

Mid-American Conference teams are no strangers to home WNIT tilts, with Ball State University, Bowling Green State, the University of Toledo and Western Michigan having all hosted games since the 1998 campaign. MAC schools have posted a 6-7 record in those contests.
MAC IN THE WNIT: Eastern is one of four Mid-American Conference schools participating in the 2011 Postseason WNIT. Including this season, 26 MAC teams have been selected to compete in the Postseason WNIT posting a 18-26 record since 1989. Toledo leads the way, making seven appearances and finishing as high as second in the 1990 edition of the WNIT. In 2004, Western Michigan advanced to the quarterfinal game before falling to Richmond, 82-66.
EASTERN VERSUS 2011 POSTSEASON TEAMS: When examining the brackets for the 2011 NCAA, WNIT and WBI tournaments, EMU recognizes nine teams that it met during the 2010-11 regular season. Out of the NCAA bracket, the Eagles played Bowling Green, Green Bay, Ohio State and Temple. Out of the WNIT, Eastern played Central Michigan, Kent State, Missouri State and Toledo, while also meeting Buffalo which is participating in the WBI. The Eagles' recorded a 4-10 record against those teams.
BEST TEAM IN WASHTENAW COUNTY?: The combined efforts between Suzy Merchant and AnnMarie Gilbert have quietly built Eastern Michigan into one of the most dominant teams in the state of Michigan. Since the 2003-04 campaign, the Eagles have won 153 games, posted five 20+ victory season and made five postseason tournament appearances. Meanwhile, the Wolverines have won 102 contests and made three postseason tournament appearances during the same stretch of time.
LEADING THE PACK: The Eagles have been one the most dominant teams statistically in the Mid-American Conference this season, leading the league in four categories and ranking in the top five in eight others. The Green and White are tops in the MAC in: field goal percentage defense (36.3%), three-point field goal percentage defense (27.5%), steals (11.71) and offensive rebounds (16.76).
SCHROCK SETS RECORD FOR GAMES PLAYED: Senior Cassie Schrock has played in 124 games during her four-year career, surpassing the trio of Nikki Knapp (2002-06), Melis Ulker (2002-06) and Sarah VanMetre (2003-07) for the all-time record for the most games played in an EMU uniform. Knapp, Ulker and VanMetre all played in 120 contests for then-Head Coach Suzy Merchant.
SCHROCK BECOMES EMU SINGLE-SEASON ASSISTS LEADER: With her three assists versus Toledo, March 11, Cassie Schrock became the EMU single-season assist leader with 189 dimes, surpassing Erika Ford's standard of 186 set in 2004-05.
GILBERT VERSUS THE BIG TEN: For the third time since Head Coach AnnMarie Gilbert's arrival, the Eagles took on a team from the Big Ten Conference. EMU is 11-36 all-time versus the Park Ridge, Ill. based conference, but the Green and White are 5-7 against Big Ten foes since the 2000-01 campaign. During that span, Eastern Michigan has posted wins over Michigan (x2), Michigan State, Ohio State and Northwestern, with losses coming against Purdue, Illinois, Indiana, MSU and OSU.
