YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team was not ready to end its season and the Eagles came up with an outstanding effort on both ends of the court to post a thrilling 67-59 win over the University of Michigan here Thursday evening, March 17, in the Convocation Center.

The Eagles won the battle of Washtenaw County by holding the visitors to just 38.7 percent from the field, hitting just 24-of-62 attempts, forcing 19 turnovers, making 25-of-63 field goals for 39.7 percent while also making 8-of-21 three-point attempts for 38.1 percent.

Eastern, now 23-12 on the year, advances to round two of the WNIT, playing Monday, March 21, in Wilmington, N.C. against the SeaHawks of the University of North Carolina-Wilmington. Game time is 7 p.m.

The Eagles had three players in double figures, led by junior guard Tavelyn James (Detroit, Mich.-Mumford) with 21 while senior guard Sydney Huntley (Cincinnati, Ohio-Purcell Marian) added 17, and junior Paige Redditt (Kansas City, Mo.-Belton) chipped in 10. Senior guard Cassie Schrock (Wadsworth, Ohio-Wadsworth) scored just six points but had a career-best 13 assists.

Michigan, which closed its season with a 17-13 record, had two players in double figures, led by Rachel Sheffer with 20 and Courtney Boylan with 10.

Boylan staked the Wolverines to a quick 2-0 lead with a layup at the 18:25 mark.

James would then go on an offensive tear, scoring all seven EMU points to give the home squad a 7-6 lead at the 15:32 mark.

After building an 11-8 advantage, the Eagles saw Michigan claw its way back to knot the game at 11-all on a layup and free throw by Carmen Reynolds with 12:39 on the clock.

The two teams traded baskets for the next seven minutes before Michigan would take a 25-21 lead with 5:05 left in the half.

The stingy EMU defense then took over and held the Wolverines without a basket the rest of the half while ripping off 10 unanswered points to take a 31-25 lead into intermission.

James led the way in the first half with 10 points while Huntley added eight and Redditt six. Schrock was not score in the first 20 minutes but she dished off 11 assists.

Sheffer paced U-M in the first half with nine while the Wolverines were hitting 11-of-30 shots for 36.7 percent. Eastern made 12-of-31 field-goal attempts for 38.7 percent.

The Eagles roared out of the halftime intermission with two straight scores to up their lead to 10, 35-25, in the first two minutes.

Michigan would chip away at that lead, pulling within five, 40-35, before Huntley scored on a long three just before the shot clock expired to make it an eight-point game, 43-35, with 11:57 left.

Schrock would follow with her first bucket of the game on a driving layup and De'Ja Wills (Anderson, Ind.-Anderson) would add a quick three 27 seconds later to boost EMU's lead to 13, 48-35, at the 10:50 mark of the second half.

Once again the visitors managed to slice away at that large deficit, cutting it to three, 53-50, before James responded with a layup to boost it back to five with 4:13 remaining.

The Eagles moved the advantage to nine, 59-50, with 2:30 left after back-to-back baskets by Schrock and James.

After Michigan cut the deficit back to seven, Huntley came up with here second last-second shot clock three of the game to make it 62-52.

Michigan would get it to six, 65-59, but the Eagles would hold on for the eight-point win.
