CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – Ice-cold shooting by the Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team proved to be the difference in the 2011 Mid-American Conference Tournament Championship game, as the Bowling Green State University Falcons defeated the Eagles, 51-46, at Quicken Loans Arena, Saturday, March 12.

The Falcons improve to 28-4 after clinching their fifth tournament championship in the past seven years. Meanwhile, the Eagles fall to 22-12 after becoming the first-ever fifth-seed to appear in the MAC Championship game.

Bowling Green's Lauren Prochaska poured in a game-high 20 points on 3-of-13 shooting and 13-of-15 from the free throw line en route to tournament MVP honors. EMU's Tavelyn James led the Eagles with 19 points on 8-of-23 shooting while adding seven rebounds and three assists. Senior Cassie Schrock added nine points, eight rebounds and four assists while Sydney Huntley chipped in eight points.

EMU quickly erased a slim halftime deficit out of the intermission with a breakaway layup by Huntley with 17:34 to play to take its first lead of the game at 25-24. The lead would see-saw back-and-forth with neither side able to open more than a four-point cushion for a stretch of 11 minutes.

A James three-pointer knotted the ballgame at 35-all, but right back down BGSU answered with a five-point spurt to get the crowd back into it and force EMU to burn a timeout with 8:01 to go.

With the tension escalating, Maggie Hennegan pushed the BGSU margin to eight, 42-35, with a pair of charity tosses.

Struggling with its ability to shoot from the floor, EMU fought through a seven-minute field goal drought that was ended with a three-pointer by Schrock with 2:08 remaining to get back within seven, 47-40.

At the start of the contest, BGSU moved out to an 8-2 advantage out of the gates, but EMU responded to cut the deficit to just one, 10-9, on seven consecutive points by James. However, a three-point field goal barrage continued for the Falcons with Prochaska and Tracy Pontius each hitting from long-range.

A 3:38 scoring drought for EMU allowed Bowling Green to go on top 20-13 with 8:41 to play in the first half, but back-to-back jumpers in the lane by Huntley again made it just a one possession contest as the Falcons experienced the same scoring woes for more than eight minutes of game action.

A James fast break layup with 1:46 left in the half ended a nearly six-minute stretch without either team notching a point to make it 20-19. Right back down the other end of the court, Prochaska sank a pair of free throws as well as a long jump shot to push the edge to 24-19.

Schrock tossed in a pair of charity tosses with just 3.3 seconds remaining to send the Green and White into the locker room at the break down 24-21.

The dynamic trio of Huntley, James and Schrock combined for all of EMU's points with James posting 11 points on 5-of-13 shooting. BGSU had eight points from Pontius, despite the Falcons being held well below their season field goal percentage at 25.8 percent (8-of-31).

EMU will now await its fate Monday, March 14, when the post-season matchups are announced late in the evening. Check EMUEagles.com for the latest post-season brackets, as well as ticket information once the information in released.
